I dunno, it never really went all the way with what it wanted to do. Stuck in the halfway horror of found-footage and mockumentary. Should have committed fully to doc style frankly. I would have enjoyed that very much.

I dunno man shit just goes crazy hard in McCarthy movies. The way that grounded realistic horror is blended with the unpredictable and unknowable supernatural, the way that spirits and the dead interact with the living, the arcane forces constantly at work but rarely in the foreground

There's also a captivating story-behind-the-story happening that's never explained or fully acknowledged. There's an entire backstory movie that could be made solely to set up what happens in Hokum. Thank you for that McCarthy I love the weird fantasy world your movies take place in.

I love at the end when they're trying to give the audience a free out for "it was actually hallucinations" and then we get a good passive wham reminding us that no, it certainly wasn't, all that definitely actually happened and was super fucked up.

Hokum is one of those good horror movies where the trauma is present and is a strong narrative force but it's also not what's driving the plot. Yeah, shit happened, and we're working through it, and the movie IS about that, but also this incredibly fucked up thing is happening that I gotta survive.

I think between this and Oddity we've established that McCarthy is most comfortable in a space where he can write stories about stupid assholes ruining things for everybody for stupid asshole reasons and then finding comeuppance. And the terrible time everyone else has along the way.

Ohm Bauman is a fucking asshole. I haven't been so turned off by a protag in a long, long time. McCarthy and Scott did a stellar job of bringing this miserable tortured freak to life. I love how much people have to work to earn their stories in these movies.

I adore how much character every character has in his movies. The casts are so small that everyone gets a chance to fulfill their archetype in the tales being told. I'm a big fan of Olin Boole, the one-eyed man in the darkness who comes with a dire warning. What a great character.

His movies aren't mysteries to solve, everything is laid out plainly, but the route to reach the desired ending is shrouded. That's where the fun is. That's where we have a good time. How do we get from Point A to Point B? The joy is in the travel.

McCarthy doesn't make horror movies so much as he makes murder thrillers that take place in a world where supernatural horror can happen. Something that is brutally sledgehammered into the audience in this movie. And I say that with affection.

I think what really sells the horror is Johnny French's performance as Isaac. He's quiet. It's sheer dry mouthed, eyes wide, immobilized terror while he never stops moving. I love a protagonist who is terrified but wants to live.
