Governance strategies for biological AI: beyond the dual-use dilemma
A common framing for governing artificial intelligence (AI) in the biological sciences is to focus on risk mitigation owing to the technology’s potential ‘dual-use’ for both beneficial and harmful applications. This is a reactive policy approach, and a broader framing that urges policymakers to actively champion the benefits alongside mitigating risks is needed, including through targeted investments aimed at securing public priorities.

Berberis repens (or Mahonia repens - plant folks don't all agree), aka Creeping Oregon Grape. Only a few inches high, it's one of my favorite native plants. It has yellow flowers in spring, followed by dusty blue berries, then amazing fall colors. This stem was particularly beautiful. (Montana) 🌿🍂
A stem with a cluster of five leaflets, with prickly margins like holly leaves, brilliantly colored for fall. The leaves, in a vibrant mix of red, yellow, pink, orange, and green, show up brightly against the muted browns and grays of the forest floor.

Thulusdhoo, Maldives. Sunset Golden Hour at the shore looking towards the Sunset Beach at a distance away. The lagoon is speckled in turquoise and light gold. The Sunset Beach with is covered by shoreline shrubs juts out from the island into the lagoon. There are groups of tourists and locals standing and sitting around watching the sunset. The sky is mostly covered in dark storm clouds, with an open line of clear sky around the middle running horizontally. The open sky goes from tangerine to gold to white the further away from the setting sun it is.

AI sheds new light on genome editing
Artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized life sciences, driving transformative advances in engineering clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated (Cas)-based genome editors for therapeutic and agricultural applications. Recent breakthroughs demonstrate how deep learning accelerates the discovery, engineering, and design of next-generation genome editing tools. In this review, we explore how AI-driven approaches are supercharging genome editing in three aspects: (i) structure-based methods for discovering novel genome editors neglected by conventional methods, (ii) engineering genome editors with enhanced properties, and (iii) the de novo design of entirely new genome editors endowed with bespoke functions. Finally, we discuss the current challenges and envision the future potential of data-driven AI to unlock new possibilities in genome editing, catalyzing innovations across biology and biotechnology.
