*tensions arising from psychological/emotional and physical/social dominance, superiority, subjugation, etc. that are enforced through ideology, and with violence when a hegemonic ideology begins to crack open.

Yes, and your parenthetical “(white)” is not actually parenthetical. Intersectional cultural studies work makes important contributions. The central Marxist notion of class struggle is rooted in the tensions* Stuart Hall identifies in his work on “societies structured in dominance.”

HA. I grew up in Grand Rapids, MI, Amway’s home base. You should’ve heard my dad rant about their MLM scheme after he and my mom were duped by our neighbors into attending what turned out to be Amway recruiting parties.

“We know this is terrifying for kings, but I think it’s terrifying for car dealers too.” Damn. That’s a great line.

No, it says, "His numbers just keep getting higher and higher..." etc. When you look at the photo attached to the comment, which shows very sparsely populated stadium seating, the facetiousness should come into focus.

But it bears repeating: the people in your life who are most likely to hurt you are people you know (usually but not always men).

Adding the bit about psychopaths was gratuitous on my part. But physiology is such that almost everyone hesitates - even if only to a small degree - when attacked. I instinctively fight back too, but it takes the brain some time to process what’s happening and get the muscles moving. It’s biology.

How about the fact that the Berlin Wall was squeaked open in late 1989, and torn down piecemeal over the next few years? Let’s see…who was POTUS in 1989…right, it was George Bush, almost a year into his first term, and just over a year away from starting a war in Iraq.

Yes. However, it takes a lot of work to be ready to use any weapon (including feet and fists) against another human being. Most people will hesitate or flinch before hurting someone else, unless they train for it. Only psychopaths don’t hesitate.

I read all three of them. A tiny bit of research showed me what a misogynistic dolt Ayn Rand was. Tolkien…eh. I liked Ursula LeGuin and Frank Herbert a lot more for SF/F. And like you, I read everything of Steinbeck’s that I could get my hands on.

PS in Victorian times, women often used their hat pins as weapons. It doesn’t take a lot of force to hurt someone with a hat pin. 😁

All of this is to say…if men with bad intentions thought that women were out there carrying longshore hooks and push daggers, they might think twice before attacking women on the street. Still, most of the violence done to women is done by a family member or intimate partner.

Handkerchief?? lol autocorrect, you’re drunk! *without the handle

ShareCrow @arguchik.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
These tools/weapons were developed to protect the hand wielding them. Without that handkerchief held in the fist, the force you apply at the tip is only distributed across the small area of at the part of the key pressing back into your hand.

These hooks were used for grabbing and pulling/lifting. There are similarly designed push-knives that also distribute the force across the hand when you stab with them. In most places, you can’t just walk around with these, because they are very effective weapons when used correctly.

Is your fist strong enough to hold the keys steady when you try scratching something like a human body? Look at an old-times longshore worker’s hook. It only works because the hook comes out of a bar held in a tight fist. The bar distributes the force to the hand. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hook_(h...

It seems to me that the butt ends of the keys are going to jam into the palm of your hand with a force equal to what you exert in punching an attacker. It doesn’t seem like they’d stay stable enough in the fist to hurt an attacker by scratching, either.

ShareCrow @arguchik.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I wouldn’t trust that “fist of keys” unless you practice with it beforehand. Try out different ways of using it on something that mimics a human body. Try punching, try scratching, try whatever, to see if it actually works. I’m skeptical of its effectiveness as a weapon.
