Every hour on the half hour having to listen to the same news on the best music radio station known to mankind. When I’m leader I’m going to ban that. And I’m a political person and love my news. But I don’t want to hear it more often than once a day at the most on the best music radio…

The bold new corporate identity created for British Telecom in 1981 by the influential design agency of Banks & Miles; a publicity folder describing the three main elements - the logo, the decorative strip & the "T" mark. #graphicdesign @doublearrow64.bsky.social flic.kr/p/2sxNRKE
A new corporate identity for the British Telecom business : British Telecom : Banks & Miles : [London] : [1981] : the three elements shown over a double page with the logo and strip across the top and the "T" mark to the left -a ll in corporate blue on yellow. The lettering is in a bold line with the use of a circle as part of the majority of the letter construction.

In 1980/81 the then Conservative Government decided to fully separate telecommunications, Post Office Telecommunications, from the Post Office and formed British Telecom. Post Office Telecommunications had been formed as part of the 1969 restructuring of the GPO into the Post Office; in 1984 BT was privatised.

The British Telecom name had been introduced in 1980 and the following year the British design and advertising agency of Banks and Miles were commissioned to develop a new corporate identity for the business. This leaflet gives an introduction to that identity with text from Peter Benton, the Managing Director of British Telecom, and John Miles of Banks & Miles. The new look was based around the use of a primary colour, yellow, a Telecom logo, a 'descriptive strip' and the "T" mark; these were in a blue. The elements were designed to be applied to a huge range of objects and items ranging from vehicles, shops, equipment and publicity. Some examples of the 'new look' are shown in the folder. Even Busby, the cartoon bird introduced by P.O. Telecommunications in 1976 was given a make over with his T-shirt bearing the T-mark. This identity lasted only ten years before it was swept away by another identity, the often derided "Piper" logo by Wolff Olins.

Colin Banks and John Miles had formed their agency in 1958 and it went on to become highly influential in the field of corporate identity working not just for the Post Office and BT but also London Transport for whom they created the "New Johnston" typeface in 1979 as designed by Eiichi Kono.

Still amazed at all the people freaking out like it's any hotter than the places they regularly go on holiday to where they cope just fine. I mean, it's not good that it's excessively warm for the UK but I think our problem is we forget to act like we're in a hot place. Wear hats, take water.

Simply cannot abide the signature “crunch” sound effect in the Magnum adverts. Doesn’t sound like chocolate, more like someone reversing over a tortoise.

No idea who to vote for in local council elections. Info online very thin on ground. Don't read local rags or listen to what (largely one political persuasion round here) say. Feels like a wasted or blind vote.
