Look what we found, a #EYASurprise collection crossover! It appears that E.H. Shepard used a copy of Bentham and Hooker’s ‘Handbook of the British Flora’ to draw these beautiful flowers. Here they are alongside our copy of the book in the Thomas Farrer Collection (TF/1890). © The Shepard Trust
Pencil sketch of a plant named 'Lysimachia Nummularia' or 'Weeping Jenny' alongside the matching illustration from Bentham and Hooker's 'Handbook of the British Flora'. The plant is vine-like and drawn in an 'S' shape, with several small flowers with pointed petals. Pencil sketch of a plant named 'Arum maculatum' or 'Cuckoopint' alongside the matching illustration from Bentham and Hooker's 'Handbook of the British Flora'. The singular flower is tapered to a point, with a spiked 'spadix' at its centre. It has one leaf with small black spots.

This heat has us considering whether the fashions of the Maeatae and the Caledonians (powerful tribes in Scotland during the Roman occupation of Britain), as depicted in the 'The Costume of the Original Inhabitants of the British Islands' (1851), would be a good option.
An engraving of two male figures from the Maeatae and the Caledonian tribes. They are shown almost naked, apart from twisted metal torques and chains around their waists. They hold a spear and carry swords. They have various wode paintings and tattoos on their bodies.

Anyone else going to see 'The Odyssey' this weekend? 📽️🧌 This is our 1857 edition of Chapman's 'Odyssey', owned by Victorian statesman Thomas Farrer. He clearly wasn't a fan of the Homeric epic as the pages remain uncut in the middle of Book 4...so he never read as far as Odysseus' entrance...⚔️⛵🏹
A 1857 edition of Chapman's 1614-1615 translation of 'The Odyssey'. The book has a dark reddish-brown cover and rests on a cushion. There are cotton ties holding the fragile spine in place, and a pair of hands are in shot, preparing to open the book. The open book showing the decorative frontispiece of 'The Odyssey', with an engraving of Homer flanked by Athena and Odysseus (and his dog). A pair of hands are in shot, holding the book open. The book is open in the middle of Book 4 of 'The Odyssey', but two of the pages is shown to be uncut at the top, implying that the book was not read beyond this point, and the reader never got to the point where Odysseus enters the story.

A sight to strike fear in the heart of archivists: the rusty metal clip! Rust causes chemical damage to paper, leaving corrosion marks and making pages brittle. These examples are from a recent deposit to our collections; the clips will be carefully removed before repacking. #archiveconservation
A rusty paperclip attached to a series of papers. There are brown marks around the shape of the clip which has damaged the paper.A pin holding together several pages. There is a brown mark on the paper surrounding the pin hole.A rusty safety pin holding several pages of paper. This is possibly the worst offender - posing risks to both archivist and the archive material.
Our next steps will be to carefully remove them, replacing where needed with brass clips and storing in our climate controlled strongroom, to ensure that the information on these papers remain accessible for many years to come.

Our collections include this copy of Thomas Bewick's 'The History of British Birds', first published in 1797 and namechecked by Charlotte Bronte in 'Jane Eyre'. Alongside the descriptions and images of birds are tiny, intricate vignettes: everyday scenes with flashes of humour or the macabre.
Entry for The Kingfisher, showing an engraving of the bird with detailed plumage, sitting on a stone at the water's edge. The description starts: 'This splendid little bird is of rather a clumsy shape, the head being large in proportion to the size of the body, and the legs and feet very small.' An engraved scene showing a woman hanging out washing in a garden, with flowers and trees. Behind her, a procession of piglets and chickens have invaded the garden, walking muddy prints across washing that has fallen onto the grass. A winged demonic figure crouches on a rock, watching a faraway crowd around a gallows. This tiny image is mentioned by Jane Eyre as she reads the book.
