The end of August 2026 marked 140 years since the arrival of the Poor Clares sisters (from Notting Hill) to the specifically built convent at Arundel, patronised by Flora, Duchess of Norfolk. The archive holds varied documents in connection, dating from the 19th & 20th centuries. #archive #documents

The archive holdings are reasonably varied here at Arundel. One of the largest series of reference numbers being labelled Miscellaneous Documents, potentially meant as temporary numbers by Dr F W Steer, for items that could be re catalogued at a later date. There has always been an array of animals kept at Arundel. Most popular, like many other country estates, are dogs & horses. These licences dated 1875 show us that Henry, 15th Duke of Norfolk had responsibility for almost 40 dogs, likely being a mix of family pets & working dogs. #archive #history

As it's St. George's day we would like to share this rather cute depiction of George and the dragon. 🐲 This was drawn as part of the cover of a hand made history on St. Benet at Holme Abbey, Norfolk, in the 19th century. #archive #archives #StGeorge #dragon #history #manuscript #document

This bundle of documents offers historical insight into a plot of land in Arundel, West Sussex between 1753 & 1847. From being converted from a dwelling into a playhouse before later back reverting back to residential use on Old Market St (now Maltravers St) #worldtheatreday #archives #history

This poem was found while cataloguing a bundle of late 19th C items this morning. We're used to seeing rhyming in verse & some phonetic spellings but this poem is unusually amusing, especially the title! Ameighlia Maireigh (Amelia Mary) daughter/waughter (water) beauties/deauties (duties) #archives

A rare sight. This matching indenture from c.1280 was discovered whilst cataloguing. Christopher's Deja vu led him to check back through his work & discover they were a pair. As indentures are copies of the same document given to individual parties it is quite rare for them to be reunited. #archive
Two halves of an indenture c.1280 relating to a religious house in Nottinghamshire.
