OMB has proposed a new rule to regulate all federal grants, including medical research grants. It fundamentally changes how research is conducted in the US and will, I think, devastate medical research. Public comment is open until July 13. I just commented and you can too. 🧵
Your comment has been sent for review. This process is dependent on agency public submission policies/procedures and processing times. Once the agency has posted your comment, you may view it on Regulations.gov using your Comment Tracking Number.

Agency: OFFICE OF MANAGEMENT AND BUDGET (OMB)
Document Type: Proposed Rule
Title: Regulation for Federal Financial Assistance
Document ID: OMB-2026-0034-0001

Comment:
I am the daughter of a cancer patient who is currently benefiting from federally funded medical research. While I am not a medical researcher myself, I care deeply about US medical research, especially cancer research. Not only is my father currently fighting lymphoma, but I have friends and family members who have survived cancer or had their lives significantly extended because of federally funded medical and scientific research. Having read this rule, I can see that it gives political appointees with no medical or scientific training the power to override qualified medical researchers in deciding whether or not research is funded. I am deeply concerned that people fighting cancer, including both my father and one of my good friends, could miss out on life saving treatments because a politician decided it didn't "advance the President's priorities." A great strength of the US medical system is that we rely on some of the smartest and most qualified people in the world to make decisions and advance research; not politicians. Our research should be evidence based, not politics based. I strongly urge the OMB to withdraw the pre-issuance political review provisions in §200.205. Please do not finalize this rule. It will harm life saving medical research our country is known for and will hurt countless cancer patients and their families.

This situation in Day Sq in Eastie is awful for pedestrians. It isn't clear which cars have the right of the way and there are no traffic signals. It doesn't look that bad from above but when you're navigating it, you really have to have your wits about you
