Low-carbon electricity sources grew faster than demand in 2025, pushing fossil fuels into decline— Solar and wind energy have grown quickly in recent years, but global electricity demand has grown faster.
Bar chart of change in global electricity generation by source from 2024 to 2025 where low-carbon sources met all of the 850 terawatt-hours increase in total generation. Solar and wind provided the largest increases (solar about 636 TWh, wind about 204 TWh), with smaller rises from nuclear and other renewables and a modest increase in gas, while coal and oil declined (coal about minus 67 TWh, oil about minus 12 TWh). Text of feedback submitted to Western Australia Museum @wamuseum.bsky.social in protest against their decision to renew their partnership with climate criminals, WoodCIDE, for a further 5 years & to "celebrate" by hosting a 'family-friendly' Woodside Open Day as part of National Science Week
Text of my complaint submitted to Western Australian Museum

It reads:
"Woodside's renewal of their longstanding sponsorship of the Western Australian Museum and the Foundation for the WA Museum is disgraceful greenwashing and reputation-laundering. The tone-deafness of a public institution like the WA Museum accepting such an arrangement, in the face of escalating fossil-fuelled destruction of land and marine ecosystems is staggering. How do you justify this partnership/sponsorship?

To "celebrate" this regrettable sponsorship by hosting Woodside Energy Open Day at the WA Maritime Museum as part of National Science Week is deeply disappointing.
Perhaps it would be salvageable if used as an opportunity to educate the public on the extreme ecosystem harms of continuing fossil fuel burning as exemplified by:

1. West Australia's extensive forest and shrublands die-off. In 2010-2011 and, again in
2024, large swathes of forests and shrublands stretching across a span of ~1,000 km turned brown and died off after the cumulative stress of prolonged drought and heatwaves...much like a coral bleaching event but on land (see
https://theconversation.com/the-big-dry-forests-and-shrublands-are-dying-in-parched-western-australia-227053)

2. 2025 Pilbara Mass Fish Kill. In January 2025 there was a devastating "mass fish kill spanning 9 km along West Australia's Pilbara coast" with an estimated 30,000 fish washed up at beaches (see https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-01-28/marine-heatwave-pilbara-mass-fish-deaths/104852574)Text of complaint submitted to Western Australian Museum continued

3. Ningaloo Reef Mass Coral Bleaching. In 2024-2025, the 40 million km2 marine heatwave that engulfed Australia caused catastrophic mass coral bleaching and mortality at Ningaloo Reef (see https://www.smh.com.au/environment/climate-change/you-realise-your-children-are-probably-never-going-to-see-ningaloo-the-way-you-saw-it-20250805-p5mkfp.html)

4. Most severe coral bleaching on record for WA coral reefs. In 2024-2025, WA's "longest and most intense" marine heatwave led to the "most severe coral bleaching on record for WA coral reefs". Mass coral bleaching and mortality occurred at coral reefs across a 1,500 km stretch of the West Australian coast (see
https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2025/aug/12/was-longest-and-most-intense-marine-heatwave-killed-coral-across-1500km-stretch?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other)

I hope the Western Australian Museum and the Foundation for the WA Museum will rethink its long-running relationship with Woodside Energy. History will remember the institutions that chose the side of health-, culture-, biodiversity- and ocean-harming fossil fuel corps as they destroyed the ecosystems that sustain and nourish us.

Preferred outcome: The WA Museum ends its partnership/sponsorship with Woodside Energy"
