I hope the same happens in human-made art: things just start getting *really weird* to stay one step ahead of the culture masticators. A permanent avant garde.

Personally, I find conversations with AI boosters to be challenging because they fail to understand how genuinely sickening this stuff is to a lot of us, regardless of how well it works. You want me to get excited, but all I feel is anger and grief. There's just no way to meet in the middle.

Regarding AI: has there been another technological innovation that elicited roughly equal amounts of glassy-eyed fanaticism and visceral revulsion? I don't think this dynamic is going to change and I wonder where it's going to lead.

"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." By that measure, pairing Matter devices[1] to an Apple Home is the definition of insanity. You can attempt to pair 20 times using *exactly the same steps* and only succeed once! [1]: Ikea, specifically.

Somebody, somewhere on social media mentioned Concord grape pie, which I didn't know was a thing, so I thought I'd make one to see what it's like. Delicious! Tastes like an adult version of childhood grape candy. And I'm finally figuring out how to avoid soggy pie bottoms.

Every AI/HCI paper I review now just sounds like this.
Research [25] shows that people [26] enjoy the feeling of winning games [3,5,19]. Enjoying things can lead to longer life expectancy [2], higher economic productivity [9,22,33-40,302] and improve mental health [9]. Yet many games still include losing players [67,4]. A recent study showed that less than half of the players in a Chess [1] match win on average [42]. We have developed an LLM-driven co-creative [66], user-led [11], mixed-initiative [80] assistant for Chess [2], through which players can redefine the rules of Chess [3] using generative AI prompting such that they are the winner of Chess [4]. A study (n=3) showed that 100\% of people felt better, healthier and more self-actualised after using our tool, showing that this may be the way forward for games and human culture more broadly in the future.

I guess I feel pretty strongly that people who actively choose social media with *that* kind of leadership ought to be called out. Does this make me some sort of hysterical wokescold? Back in my day, OG hackers would have balked at the idea of corporate community w/a moral center of white supremacy.

Earlier versions of the game did acknowledge the creators of the original games at the start of each section, and I consider it unacceptable that this was removed at Jon’s direction. Stephen Totilo noticed this change and wrote a nuanced article here: www.gamefile.news/p/a-complica...

It's impossible to despise the DOGE crew as much as they deserve. The result of their work includes the death of millions, and a possibly irreversible decline in America's scientific and technological capacity, and they actually increased the debt to do this. World historical villains.
“There’s this misconception that we all just went in there and didn’t really think about what we were doing,” Hassen said, speaking virtually from a hotel room in San Diego. “I spent 24/7 thinking about it, waking up at three in the morning thinking, ‘Am I doing the right thing?’ … And I know I did.”To Hassen, whose pre-government career involved turning around distressed companies, “DOGE was not radical,” he writes in the book. It was “not a wrecking ball, but a catalyst.” “Did we eliminate the deficit? No. Of course not,” he said. “But we made it on the top of everyone’s minds, albeit briefly, for a few months, that this deficit is something that we need to fix.”

If it's a painting intended for a magazine cover, it's "illustration." But if it's a painting of some unremarkable noble that goes in their banquet hall, it's "fine art." Clearly!

Good article, but… where are the games "of any complexity" that Zach talks about? And in any case, the tech was never the hard part of game design. Unreal or Unity already condense decades of technical knowledge into their engines, no need for an LLM to build something for you.

satin ribbons

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.
