The hilarious thing about Whole Foods banning MSG is that Whole Foods is, nonetheless, packed full of MSG.

@hankgreen.bsky.social Today's 4x3 still claims it can't load. Just FYI.
A screenshot of the 4x3 game board taken on October 7th, 2026. There is a pop-up message that reads, "Couldn't load today's puzzle, so this is a practice board. It won't count, but you can play! Refresh to try again." The game has a 3x3 grid of gray boxes with words in white text. The nine words fit into four categories of three words each, with one word being an anchor word that shows up in every category. The words are 'heavy', 'glam', 'grave', 'somber', 'death', 'nine', 'middle', 'one', and 'welter'.

The backyard weather station says yesterday got up to 44°C (112°F), I'm not entirely sure I believe it, but also the NOAA weather station that said it was 2°C (4°F) cooler was 5 mi closer to the coast, so...maybe?

I wanted to make some clever quip about how the temperature where I live reached 104°F on 2026-10-4, but I checked and it actually got all the way up to 106°F in my backyard, which may have been in the running for an all-time October record, except yesterday was even hotter.

Full disclosure I'm not an expert, just a science teacher who took courses on both oceanography and the geology of natural disasters. Also my response is somewhat oversimplified, there are some intermediate cases.

They can take hours to cross significant portions of an ocean, by the time they've been detected by multiple buoys and we can tell where they will hit and when, in most cases we have plenty of time for warnings, or they were too close to get detected by a buoy to give notice at all.

AI is alarming for many reasons: it's a dangerous financial bubble, an environmental catastrophe, and a tool for eroding wages and labor power. But in addition to all that, AI is an epistemic disaster. 1/
The North Pole at night, hand-tinted in blues and purples so it looks more like a moonscape. Protruding from the ice is the cross-sectioned head and neck of a man, his brains on display. Stepping over the leftmost mountains is a killer pulp robot, about to crush the head. Leaning against the rightmost mountains is a sneering, princely toff in a red frock coat, holding a cane that has penetrated the decapitated skull and lodged in the brains.

A long but good thread about perverse incentives around AI in the business world, and the smoke and mirrors games that are letting it drag on longer than it should, wasting resources at multiple levels all along the way. Essay version linked in Doctorow's second post.

Not surprising, but still sad. I asked my 8yo what happened on this day 250 years ago, they responded "we declared independence." "From who?" "England". The bar is on the ground and half the country couldn't step over.
