Of all the reasons to hate cars, this one did not occur to me until I bought an Aranet4: they suffocate you with CO2! No readings ever come in as high as when you’re riding in a car (or packed bus – that first spike on September 13). No wonder long (and even short) drives are so tiring.

Look, I don't ask for a lot, but I don't think the ventilation in a DOCTOR'S OFFICE should be three times worse than the ventilation on a crowded NYC subway car (the little yellow upward blip on the right). For comparison, the green plateau on the left is the NYT office.

A chart of carbon dioxide levels from my Aranet4 app shows a green line around 700 ppm. It then steeply escalates past 3000 ppm, becoming a red line, then goes back down and has a tiny yellow peak around 1100 ppm.

The Aranet4 was a great addition to our SDCC experience. Very simple to use and force refresh. It showed us that the press rooms were well ventilated and the floor was not, as expected. Other panel rooms varied, and some areas that felt open and safe were actually not. Anyway, highly recommended.

There's no official safe exposure timer for elevated CO₂ and it also depends on the context (is it about cognitive abilities or catching airborne diseases). But for a reference, at 2000 ppm indoors, 4% of the air you're breathing is coming straight out of other people's lungs. At 3600 ppm it's 8%.
