Of all the reasons to hate cars, this one did not occur to me until I bought an Aranet4: they suffocate you with CO2! No readings ever come in as high as when you’re riding in a car (or packed bus – that first spike on September 13). No wonder long (and even short) drives are so tiring.

Look, I don't ask for a lot, but I don't think the ventilation in a DOCTOR'S OFFICE should be three times worse than the ventilation on a crowded NYC subway car (the little yellow upward blip on the right). For comparison, the green plateau on the left is the NYT office.

A chart of carbon dioxide levels from my Aranet4 app shows a green line around 700 ppm. It then steeply escalates past 3000 ppm, becoming a red line, then goes back down and has a tiny yellow peak around 1100 ppm.

The Aranet4 was a great addition to our SDCC experience. Very simple to use and force refresh. It showed us that the press rooms were well ventilated and the floor was not, as expected. Other panel rooms varied, and some areas that felt open and safe were actually not. Anyway, highly recommended.

Happy to see the organizers @wereallylikeher.bsky.social and the back two rows of the audience were wearing good masks at the recent screening of #WomenInFilm Mamma Mia! at the Revue Cinema in Toronto. And for good reason too, as a portable Aranet4 CO2 log shows.

Plot of CO2 for movie theater with approximately 60-70% occupancy shows an initial spike up to 1700ppm during the introduction to the movie and then a gradual increase up to 1800 ppm by the end, indicating that steady state was never reached and that the outdoor air exchange per person was very low. There is a short spike up again to 1900 ppm as everyone moved through the concession area, and then the plot falls to 450 ppm outside.
