Reads like O'Connor's next book after Accumulation Crisis if he hadn't taken on theorizing capital's ecological, social, and infrastructural conditions of possibility - its environment - resisting their/its own destruction.

Yes, teacher pleasing, for point accumulation, and a degree - indicating job skills, little more. No fault of their own, they've been trained to be deathly afraid of being wrong, especially in front of people. All these apologies & caveats before they speak, I just want to fill them with confidence.

It feels like they've been trained to look for an outside expert rather than in how to do the work, themselves, the analyze a reading. Its hard to write supportive and critical commentary on such essays. Will probably have to write a general comment and provide models for reading.

The sociology students who do this most consistently end up using mid-20th C perspectives - Struct Funct, "Conflict", and SI - in their 50s/60s incarnations - to interpret critical cultural, env'tal, science, and sex-gender readings. And why is it always Merton?!

I am in the odd position of wishing my students didn't do such good work seeking other resources to help them understand assigned readings. I am finding that they've been trained not to explore the text more intensely but to look for information and perspectives - I guess on the web - for clarity.

When I first encountered it as an undergrad, I knew Hobbes was wrong in those magnificent and pivotal passages about the state of nature, and it gave me hives b/c I couldn't figure out what exactly was wrong. Lousy theory prof wouldn't help. Another gave me After Virtue and I quickly recovered.

Watching #6, Creighton, vs #12, Akron, and good lord D1 men's soccer is not good... so much kick and run, too much unnecessary physicality, so many errant passes, and dumb lack of strategy.

What's killed me is the staggering number of folks with a BA or BS who accept his claims to have read, understood, and applied social science in prepping his op-eds... when anyone who's read any social science can see he actively misinterprets everything he reads for ideological purposes.
