My favourite grasshopper fact: Grasshoppers first appeared on the planet 250 million years ago. Grass did not appear on the planet until 40 million years ago Imagine it: 210 million years, hopping around on any random surface you can find, waiting for the grass that will make you truly yourself.

Google unlawfully maintained its search monopoly: billions in payments that made switching economically irrational for browsers and device makers, plus deliberate friction to stop users changing defaults. The result — roughly 70% of US search access points preset to Google, and...

How do you hold a search monopoly for years? Pay browsers and device makers billions, then make switching a maze. Earlier this month @duckduckgo.com (@joejerome.com) filed an amicus brief in the U.S. v. Google appeal in support of the ruling. spreadprivacy.com/google-appea...

It's a mystery to me that a case launched in March 2024 still hasn't concluded. But it's not just investigations - a bunch of other rules have a clear-cut application and yet are left ignored (ever tried to switch default from a search app on Android? you can't, though DMA art 6.4 is clear on that).

4️⃣ Treat refusal and consent signals separately — consent signals operational only once interoperable global standards exist 5️⃣ Guarantee open, multi-stakeholder standardisation protected from capture — no single vendor, OS or platform defining the signal unilaterally 6/6

Our asks to co-legislators: 1️⃣ Let privacy browsers ship protections or the signal on by default — and drop a mandatory "set your preference" prompt 2️⃣ Allow — but never mandate — extensions to handle consent 3️⃣ Keep consent exemptions narrowly framed on genuinely low-risk processing 5/n

Privacy signals close a gap browsers and extensions can't close alone: a lot of tracking comes from the website itself (first-party), where the site's own consent interface is the only reliable route to decline it. 3/n

Brexit should have been a lesson. It's a misunderstanding of sovereignty. Individual countries that are not China or the US have to follow the rules set by major powers as they have no bargaining power. Only together European countries are strong.
