That time of year when family and friends ask if I've heard about the research that just won the Nobel Prize.

Of course peer review is important, and it should not be abandoned. Here I’m only discussing the selection process among a pool of excellent applications and i propose some leads to make it more efficient.

Grant peer review costs a lot: ~$40k per application in reviewer time, with proposals reviewed again and again. In @thetransmitter.bsky.social , I propose a partial lottery: reviewers decide pass/fail, chance picks among the passes, and "unmissable" ideas and ECRs get protected routes.
thetransmitter.org
How about adding an element of chance to grant review?
A process that uses a lottery system saves time and accepts that, above a quality threshold, luck has always played a part in science funding.

Interesting piece in which @itsneuronal.bsky.social suggests dropping the common bit-per-spike metric & reporting the duration of held-out data to validate a model Seems to be just 120ms of data for a sharply tuned, high firing rate head-direction cell, i.e. just 3-4 spikes arxiv.org/abs/2607.28779

Held-out log-likelihood is the standard currency for comparing statistical models of neural spike trains, and is often reported as bits per spike relative to a homogeneous Poisson baseline. The units ...

end of the summer, time to share some cool recent @elife.bsky.social papers: this *important* study shows how locus coeruleus activity is coordinated with heart rate during sleep, confirming previous work in mice and humans, with a possible role for sleep-dependent memory consolidation

Noradrenergic infraslow rhythm during sleep is the critical link between heart-rate dynamics and memory consolidation

Really cool article on the modulation of striatal dopamine signals by trajectory errors. Would love to see it during freely moving behavior now :) Kudos to Eleanor Brown, 1st author on this paper and former undergrad in the lab! www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Terrible accident at Laguardia, a plane from Montreal crashed with an emergency truck. My deepest condolences to the families. Had I accepted an invitation to go to NYC today, I would have certainly been on that plane. www.cbc.ca/news/world/l...

Absolutely. But then you have different solutions to the problem of how to align these never ending drifting representations across the brain. One solution (not the only one I guess) is through “fixed” low dimensional latent factors. Prediction: grid cells do not drift either.

New paper alert! 🚨 We found that the brain's compass is remarkably stable at two scales 1️⃣ the system maintains its internal organization for weeks 2️⃣ It "remembers" its orientation for weeks, even after a single visit This may be key to how the brain aligns its other maps. Paper: rdcu.be/e3waP

Great read by @alexkwan.bsky.social on how fundamental neuroscience research has paved the way for new drug development. I’d also highlight orexin’s role in sleep–wake regulation and the upcoming wave of dual orexin receptor antagonists (DORAs) for sleep disorders (& soon agonists for narcolepsy).
