Lindelof exec produced both. Watchmen I remember having a lot more bigger ideas and interesting stuff, but Lanterns has a better focus on characters and ground level lived-experience. Good chemistry from the leads too. Which is better? Eeehhhhh... Neither are Legion, but nothing is! Legion rules.

I think GL stuff is just the dumbest stuff in the world... and thankfully so does the show heyoooooo! Probably the show is interesting, I think, in the context of superhero TV shows, probably not interesting at all in terms of actual comic GL.

This one, by showing that people are basically 'good' underneath, and everyone is trying to do the best thing in a very messy world, at least keeps the 'good' part of the fantasy, if not the powers.

The fantasy of comics and superheroes is not the powers, but that they do GOOD with them. This is nice, but explains why shows like this get into trouble when trying to bring capes in to the real world - either you are undermining the central fantasy, or you are backing into weird fascist shit.

I guess they are doing the 'decompressed storytelling' thing of the 2000s, and attempting to do the ACAB thing of rejecting all institutionalised power structures of post-Watchmen stuff of the 90s. I guess they did it well, but maybe the zeitgiest has moved on?

But it can't escape the 'modern superhero thing' where ANY story is really only for putting the pieces in place for a new status quo, and in a couple years the whole thing could just be summed up in a sentence or so at the start of the next one.

Supergirl is the most recent example of this. The comic had lush alien jungles, the film has an infinitely flat blank plain (mountains in background). The Flash, The latest Transformers - lotta battles on 'default Unreal lay out'

I get very much that 'infinitely flat blank plain' fits emotionally with the dramatic moment in LANTERNS ep 7 - it is the 'go to underworld' moment... but it plays almost as a pastiche of modern CGI world-building.

An anecdote from the movie is that the younger sister's part was cut down (allegedly!) because she was too overwhelming a screen presence and Bacall felt threatened. Bacall won that one, but didn't notice the 'bookish girl' running away with the movie jut across the street.
