Feds quietly exempt oilsands and gas power plants from environmental impact assessments
The change comes as part of a suite of amendments to Canada's impact assessment laws passed by the Carney government early Wednesday morning.

Basically, sometimes we've got to deprioritize the "Why are they like this???" question and be a little more curious about why, nevertheless, other sectors and interests want to associate themselves with tech assholes + gain something from joining in their project.

I've got a piece in @disjunctionsmag.bsky.social! I make the argument that there's limits to thinking through the wants and desires of tech CEOs when the real way the sector builds and exercises power is through alliances with energy + far-right interests... disjunctionsmag.com/articles/ai-...

Hey if your Dean ever comes up to you and says, "hey colleague we need you to become an emergency program coordinator with a few week's notice. You can just bank the course release that comes with that role and use it later," think about how--indefatigably--later is not now.

Ontario is still writing its rules for datacentres. But Ford's pitchdeck for foreign investors explicitly markets Hamilton’s waterfront for deregulated AI datacentre development, including "sovereign" AI opportunities." Sovereign AI. Built for foreign investors. With no rules. #HamOnt
"Ontario — Your investment partner," reads the title of an investment prospectus circulated by the Ontario government at Mark Carney's private investment summit of 200 foreign CEOsrelevant section: "The Steelport site is undergoing
master planning following M5 Industrial zoning.
Commercial opportunities are expected
to be announced in Q4 2026, with Phase 1
construction anticipated to commence in 2027."

I'm particularly pleased with this bit!
One implication of these factors for STS thinkers and environmental advocates engaging on the issue is the need to take stock of the internal analyses happening within the !eld. The goal cannot simply be to demand that machine learning scientists become ecologically educated, moving from ignorance to action. This work is already proceeding from within. Similarly, despite potential limitations, the proposals in play all exceed mere technosolutionism, and include complex accounts of social relations, both within proximate research institutions and across a wider global academy. It is therefore essential to track how machine learning researchers develop their own internal theories of change, how they increasingly understand social, infrastructural, methodological, and planetary outcomes to be mutually entangled, and how they seek to expand or limit moral and material imaginaries that might better respond to such a conjuncture. This knowledge can provide further points of leverage. For one, and breaking from previous periods of epistemic virtue formation that were predicated on the formation of new scienti!c selves (Daston & Galison, 2007), the texts analysed in this article suggest that this community is taking the group, rather than the individual, as the central agent in this political story. External advocates, seeking to engage researchers, might do well to do the same.
