She also changed the text speed to slow at some point. I try to only help by saving between sessions and occasionally helping her get from the console home screen menus back into the game, so text speed stays, unfortunately.

Anyway, this is why I love mainline Pokémon. I love being grossly underleveled and then just finding a way. Each difficult battle is a delightful little puzzle and I like trying them several times with different approaches and figuring out what works.

Underrated MVP: Metronome the hold item. An actual delight for super-effective sweeps. Watch the move just get stronger each time and hit like an absolute truck when they send out their final ace. So satisfying.

Honorable mentions: Crobat swept Aaron, Machamp swept Flint, Pachirisu paralyzing Spiritomb first was necessary for the Beautifly setup, and Torterra was responsible for setting up Stealth Rock for Bertha’s Sturdy Golem and handling Cynthia’s Gastrodon. Floatzel provided moral support.

Finally got around to beating Cynthia today! The absolute MVP of my League challenge was Beautifly, who swept Bertha, Lucian and most of Cynthia while very underleveled by setting up with Quiver Dance against a special attacker. The lesson here is butterfly Pokémon are superior.

The “League Champion! Congratulations!” screen in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond. The trainer name is Dawn, and her team Beautifly, Floatzel, Crobat, Pachirisu, Torterra and Machamp.

Caterpie managed to climb up to where I put the Switch 2 Pro controller, take it, wake the console, and then start a new game of Brilliant Diamond on Shadey’s profile. So far she has managed to name herself 1 and pick the darkest-skinned Lucas. Still trying to name Barry. #Babyplayspokemon

It's not like I don't get the disdain for BD/SP - it really doesn't add much, it lacks a lot of Platinum features, and a number of things about it feel rushed or silly. (Everything about the Pokétch is so awkward! The hidden moves "app" is glaringly thrown together, and also whyyy only one button)

(Note: if you are not a capture mechanics nerd, the difficulty modifier applies because my Pokémon are underleveled - if you had a Pokémon at level 47 or higher, it probably wasn't that hard for you.)

There will plainly never be another capture harder than this in the game; once I've got the eighth badge the 0.1x difficulty modifier goes away and future legendaries are much easier. So the only logical thing to do is use the Master Ball here.

Really is kind of nuts that BDSP did not change Dialga/Palkia's catch rate back to 30 *and also* they have the Sw/Sh difficulty modifier mechanic pre-eight badges. I'm on Dialga now with nothing better than Ultra Balls, and asleep at 1 HP it'd be 2.119% per ball.

Apparently, in Gen VIII specifically, Tentacruel cannot learn the Toxic TM. It can learn it both before and after, so I'm assuming this is just a mistake in the compatibility list? Very annoying. (Tentacruel learns Hex naturally... but has no way to reliably inflict a status it could benefit from!)

I’m playing Brilliant Diamond (never actually finished a playthrough when it came out because I had too much stuff on my hands) and there’s got to be something up with encounters while biking, right? I keep running into a new encounter when I *haven’t even moved* since the previous encounter.

It kind of actively encourages not actually having the Pokémon you want to train do any battling. But battling is how you get to know your Pokémon. I don’t bond with a Pokémon that’s just passively leveling in the background all the time.

Something that bugs me about the new experience mechanics is that now any Pokémon fainting *lowers the total amount of experience your team gets for every subsequent Pokémon you fight*. A Pokémon that fights and faints is now the only one that *doesn’t* get experience.

For me it mainly would have meant something if it could have rescued my Pokémon off my Gen I/II cartridges before their internal batteries ran dry, and thus given me some Pokémon that could've followed me up from my very first games... but those were never made transfer-compatible with new gens.

I view all this with some distance because... I personally only ever used Pokémon Bank to get the free Celebi. I never really did the transfer to later generations thing, because it meant permanently losing the Pokémon from their original cartridges, and I was just never prepared to do that.

The closure of Pokémon Bank was inevitable but it does suck, especially for people who were actively using it to this day to transfer Pokémon. It might be a signal they're going to publish more Switch ports on Pokémon Day, but that obviously doesn't help people playing on original carts.

Mystery (partially) solved: the *front-facing* claws came from the Yellow version Pidgeot, twice, with one claw erased on each foot. Note that on the actual Pidgeot sprite I'm pretty sure what I interpreted as the rightmost claw was actually the other foot...

I believe I took the same one foot and removed the left toe on the right foot and the right toe on the left foot, which I thought was a very clever way to disguise the fact it was the same foot twice. (You can see that the left toe on the left foot and the right toe on the right foot are identical.)
