Important new paper about *trust* in science. The ABC article suggests a scientific question where the original paper asks for transparency in scientific procedures. Scientists who agreed with proposal were locked out of the vote. It's time for #Anthropocene to be mainstream news.

To me it is clear we have entered the Anthropocene and humans are having a dramatic impact on the climate and environment. It is still unclear to me why the 2024 vote for defining the geological period of the Anthropocene was rejected.

Are we in the Anthropocene Epoch? Scientists can't decide
While the Anthropocene is a term most of us are well aware of, it is not an official geological epoch. Now a group of scientists has reignited the push to get it formally recognised.

Defining the Anthropocene using precise geological evidence
Nature Reviews Earth & Environment, Published online: 08 September 2026; doi:10.1038/s43017-026-00817-8The Anthropocene is widely used without fixed definition. This Perspective argues for its base to be defined in 1952 by a sharp plutonium upturn coinciding with changes in multiple proxies, providing a globally correlatable horizon reflecting substantial human-driven Earth system disruption.

Future directions for Anthropocene research and its applications
Nature Reviews Earth & Environment, Published online: 08 September 2026; doi:10.1038/s43017-026-00820-zThe Anthropocene is a term applied across geological, environmental and social sciences, and the humanities and arts. This Perspective explores various applications of the term and discusses how a consistent definition could support transdisciplinary efforts to address modern environmental challenges.

How can #Anthropocene discourse move forward after the (contested) 2024 rejection? In a new working paper with Jürgen Renn, Jochen Büttner & Manfred Laubichler, we argue the Anthropocene diagnosis has only sharpened.
