I once got out of a ticket for turning in a spot w/ no left turns allowed when the officer saw my printed Mapquest directions in the passenger seat that (1) indicated I was not from the area & (2) showed the internet told me to make that turn.

You know someone who was sexually assaulted when they were in school. And if you say you don't, just remember that no one has ever told you.

The fiscal year is over. The dying Social, Behavioral, and Economic division of NSF ended up awarding 90 total grants this year, as opposed to ~700-800 in recent past years. Source: grantwitness.org/nsf/analyses...
The graph shows the cumulative number of awards made by month across this fiscal year, as compared to the last 6 fiscal years. The line for this year is total flat until June, but then finally gets up to 91 by October. In prior years the increase starts building earlier and ends on average in the 700-800 range (with variability, last year was only between 400-500).

It was not even 5 years ago that we asked if changing perceptions of blame around campus sexual assault was a "temporary blip" or "cultural shift." The stories coming out from Cornell paint a pessimistic picture, especially from those in power.

My wife made some chocolate cake yesterday. Last night I saw some large crumbs in a bowl on the counter. I had some. I got worried. Her cake sucked. Turned out she cleaned the charcoal of food bits from the bottom of the oven and I ate some.

Reminds of an old message board when an active conservative poster asked how far out we cared about the world. He said he cared about how things are now & for his kids' generation but couldn't care less what happens after that. He refused to believe others thought differently, which said a lot.

Our daughter is a lover of books and stories. Books are part of her days and nights. One time I asked if she wanted to take something to play w/ at the playground and she said, “Yeah… BOOKS!” Dolly Parton helped fuel that love. She’s loved every trip to the mailbox that revealed a new book.

Much more supervisory & practice-centered w/ research being a peripheral part of the job now. My standard CV differs from the specific format my institution wants & what courts find important when I testify. Don't want all 3 versions floating around & getting misconstrued (esp in court).

Jennifer, to offer a helpful bit instead of just hammering my hobby horse: I think you can do anonymous sharing on Zenodo, even without using an external tool, by using drafts. It's a bit of a workaround. Haven't tried it myself. Instructions are in here: daniellakens.blogspot.com/2026/08/whic...

One thing I did: survey students in my class on a few things, including if anyone in their family had gone to college before. Made note of students who showed me something (whether grade or insight at a point in class), & emailed them after semester offering to chat about job/grad school interests.

It can be nerve-wracking putting your neck out & go from talking about things theoretically to working w the people that would make things real & actually do this stuff in evaluations that affect people. I was apprehensive but am glad we took this step.
