New research from Christine Mokher, CM Metcalfe & me in Teachers College Record! Dual enrollment reaches ~2.8 million students/year but is mostly already college-bound students. CTE-focused DE may reach a broader group, but what barriers remain even when there's no cost to students?🧵

I don't disagree. But, as I wrote back to these reporters, I am most optimistic about projects that respond to the expressed concerns of students and teachers. These are the people who spend 180 days inside schools each year, and they're the key actors in the process of teaching and learning. 1/n

This is quite an anecdote about how our current Secretary of Education got the job. www.politico.com/news/magazin...
Linda McMahon was in her living room late one night, shortly after Trump won his second election, when her phone rang. Trump wanted to know if the woman who had led the Small Business Administration in his first term — and had been CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment before that — wanted to be his secretary of Education.

“Mr. President,” McMahon recalled telling him, “you know that I have not been in the world of education.”

“Well, you did graduate from college, didn’t you?” he responded, according to McMahon’s recollection.

Trump wasn’t looking for someone with education credentials. What he wanted instead was another business leader that would deliver a “return on investment” in the Department of Education. He also said her goal would be to put herself “out of a job” with the eventual downsizing of the department, she recalled.

“That’s not necessarily how I would expect to be courted,” she chuckled before accepting his request. McMahon would be the only one of two members from Trump’s first Cabinet — along with budget director Russ Vought — to be invited back for the second.

My predictions: Rahm Emmanuel has (at least) a decent showing in the 2028 primaries because he's working to open up this very group. The eventual democrat nominee will appear at least once with Jonathan Haidt.

The only thing I will add is that there is no way alpha lasts longer in that location than GEMS (7 years). They've tried to operate a city-within-a-city there for the ultra rich, but they are still trying to crack education. This is nothing more than a real estate play.

Both the Economist and others suggest this study demonstrates that AI can help students. So I contacted the lead researcher to figure out how many. Answer: Out of ~26,000 kids, a total of 20. And five months after starting to use AI, only four continued to spend 65 minutes on homework. Four.
Graph of student exam scores correlated to homework completion time for to groups, students using AI and those that did not. There is a slight spike for studens using AI who also maintained extensive homework completion time. As described in post, the number of students falling into this bucket was 20 out of 26,000.

Evaluating North Dakota Student Access to Diverse CTE Pathways after HB1199
Anthony M. Perry

This study evaluates the impact of North Dakota House Bill 1199, which provided $80 million for regional Area Technical Centers (ATCs) through competitive grants. The project uses a mixed-methods approach featuring a difference-in-differences analysis of course enrollment data and a qualitative case study of cross-sector collaboration at the Career Impact Academy. The research investigates whether regional capital improvements and industry matching requirements provide a cost-effective strategy for expanding career pathways in sparsely populated, rural states.
