ICE Out of CA coalition @iceoutofca.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
2/ Our full statement ⬇️. We are so grateful to Asm. Isaac Bryan @ib2real.bsky.social and his amazing team, to the 17 local electeds, and 93 orgs that backed this bill.
For immediate release: September 30, 2026

ICE Out of CA decries Governor’s veto of AB 1537,
The No Side Jobs for ICE Act

“How many police are secretly moonlighting for ICE? We must uncover the truth”

September 30, 2026 - The ICE Out of California coalition condemned today Gov. Newsom’s veto of AB 1537, the No Side Jobs for ICE Act” authored by Asm. Isaac Bryan.

The first-in-the-nation bill, supported by a broad coalition of immigrant, civil rights, and labor organizations from across the state, including 17 City and County elected officials, would have ensured that police, sheriffs, and certain other law enforcement officers in the state could not take on secondary employment in any job that directly involves "engaging in arresting, detaining, transporting, or deporting" people under federal or out-of-state immigration laws. This prohibition would have applied whether the “side job” is with ICE, a private corporation, or with a law enforcement agency in another state which has enacted anti-immigration legislation.

The coalition issued the following statement:

Over 90 immigrant and civil rights organizations from across the state strongly supported AB 1537 because it would have closed a disturbing loophole in state law and brought urgently needed transparency.

Gov. Newsom’s veto of AB 1537 leaves Californians completely in the dark.

A handful of extreme Sheriffs and other law enforcement associations opposed AB 1537, with some, like the San Bernardino Sheriff, making clear that they wished to maintain the authority to allow local officers to moonlight for ICE.

At the end of the day, we are forced to ask: what are they hiding? How many sheriffs and police are secretly moonlighting for ICE and abducting our neighbors? Now more than ever, we must uncover the truth.

We are grateful to Asm. Bryan for his powerful leadership as well as to community supporters across the state.

.@caasanfrancisco.bsky.social supported #AB1537 and this veto is so disappointing. How can we be a sanctuary state if our own law enforcement officers are allowed to volunteer for the very agencies arresting, detaining, and deporting our loved ones?

Calling for the incarceration of Chinese Americans isn't a joke. It's a violent threat, and given the dark history of WWII Japanese incarceration, it's a threat that Asian Americans take seriously.

My statement condemning today’s devastating decision on TPS for Haiti and Syria.
Graphic with white text box on a purple and dark purple background. Text reads: Councilor Louijeune’s Statement Condemning Supreme Court’s Decision to Allow the Trump Administration to Terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians & Syrians. I am deeply disappointed by the Supreme Court’s decision to allow the Trump Administration to terminate TPS for Haitians and Syrians, recklessly placing more than 350,000 Haitians and thousands of Syrians at risk of deportation. This decision is a devastating blow to families, workers, and entire communities. Haitian TPS holders are essential members of our workforce, serving as healthcare professionals, home health aides, childcare providers, construction workers, transportation employees, and small business owners. TPS exists because conditions in countries like Haiti remain unsafe — with profound political instability, widespread violence, kidnappings, and humanitarian crises. I stand with Haiti’s TPS holders and all TPS holders, and will continue fighting for permanent, humane solutions that keep families together and protect those who cannot safely return home.
