Two new *very exciting* #handsoff events came in today: American Samoa and Puerto Rico. Send them some love tonight, y'all. And in case you hadn't zoomed out on the map, let me do it for you, because multiple cities in Portugal, France, the UK, the Netherlands, and Germany are showing up.

I am a judge for this year’s National Book Awards! Excited to see other familiar faces on this panel. With the current state of the world, spending this summer reading excellent books will feel like slow dancing in a burning room. Looking forward…

There will be no tipping point. No rock bottom. No policy heinous enough, no egg prices high enough to make them renounce their hate. There will be neither regret nor reckoning, just our work daily and diligently for better, for justice.

There are people who voted for all this and are now suffering consequences. Please know that if they could do it all over again…they would vote exactly the same way. Craft your calls for “empathy”accordingly.

“In this sense, the oft-noted discursive silence on the topic of slavery in Africa should not be seen as evidence of forgetting or denial, but rather as evidence that, in many instances, these memories still constitute…bodies of experience rather than discursive knowledge” (Argenti, 35)

🗃️ I am writing a book about children & slavery. The Middle Passage chapters are so difficult. Very very bad things happened to children on slave ships and it doesn’t feel right to turn any of into “argument” or “evidence.” I am trying to hold them in (with?) the writing but I just want to give up.

M. Jacqui Alexander writes that “crossings are never undertaken all at once and never once and for all.” It is my hope that by evolving into a site that is transparently iterative, Mapping Marronage will illustrate the fits and starts of maroon journeys, and the many stops along the way to freedom.
