For the final day of our canal themed week here's "Red Bridge" by Walter Steggles. The oil painting is a post-war re-working of the image derived from preparatory sketches of the scene from 1931. #WalterSteggles #EastLondonGroup

For the penultimate day of our canal themed week here's "The Hertford Union Canal (AKA Duckett's Cut)" by Albert Turpin from his post-war work, most likely the mid to late 1950s. The large building now houses the Chisenhale Gallery. #AlbertTurpin #EastLondonGroup

I have raised concerns with ministers about the welfare of the beagles at MBR Acres, a breeding facility for laboratory animals. Animal testing belongs in the past but while we win that, the welfare of all animals must be better protected.

Good morning, John @rentouljohn.bsky.social & thanks for the re-post today. Here are two sketches of the same view that might not otherwise get shown this week because there are a lot of canal views to choose from in the Group's output. They are both for "Canal at Bow" by Elwin Hawthorne from 1932

For day two of our canal themed week I'm returning to the same location as yesterday's painting but from a slightly differe viewpoint & by a different Group member! This is "Newly Painted House" by Cecil Osborne from 1933. It depicts Water Meeting Bridge on Prince Albert Road. #CecilOsborne

Good morning @theunhurriedreader.bsky.social but 24 hours later on my behalf: my apologies! We went out for most of yesterday & I didn't get back here again until this morning. Here's one which might be appropriate for #SundayMorning: this is "Church Row, Hampstead" by Elwin Hawthorne from c.1935.

Good morning, Primrose @craftyprimrose.bsky.social & how true, thank you. This one of "St Lukes Church & Woodbine Cottages" by Albert Turpin seems to me to depict a leaf-strewn road & pavement so maybe it is appropriate for autumn. It most likely dates to the mid to late 1950s. #AlbertTurpin

To conclude our landscape themed week here's a very rare example of Elwin Hawthorne's work in this genre: urban views predominate in his known catalogue of paintings. This is a watercolour of "Purbeck Hlls" by him from 1934. #ElwinHawthorne #EastLondonGroup #Purbecks #Dorset

Today is the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street. The painting has the title of "Cable Street" but it is actually a view of Grace's Alley just off Cable Street. It is by Albert Turpin who was arrested on the day & who would later become Mayor of Bethnal Green in 1946. #AlbertTurpin
