I was an evangelical teenager and it was women that didn’t shame me or call me an idiot, but quietly gave me access to the other parts of life that helped me find my way out. I am eternally grateful to Susan, Ginger, and Pat for ignoring the hateful parts of me and nourishing the curious parts.

For the love of everything, why??? And if it is as simple as generating false demand, whose actual money pays for what’s supplied for that demand?

Agree that it is so hard to be concise when talking about electricity regulations and markets, particularly in WECC outside of CAISO. Just so many layers of intersecting jurisdictions and non-jurisdictional entities. There are no easy solutions either, which is what people want.

Ok here is something that my brain won’t stop thinking about: does the 6% energy burden metric need to be reevaluated given that the externalities of fossil fuels means most electricity was too cheap at the meter when the metric was developed?

It’s not just large projects that reach EFSEC that are opposed in OR on “save the farmland” grounds. A small 10-acre battery project is being opposed in the Hillsboro area right now because “oh my god it ruins the agricultural character of the area”.

Trying to imagine what would have happened if Dems in OR had tried this when Senate Republicans returned from fleeing to avoid a cap-and-trade law passing several years ago.

I think all of this is great, but in my experience living in the Bay Area for 16 years the rental buildings, both apartments and homes, were mostly old, with terrible windows and almost no insulation. Is there any effort to change that as well to really reap the benefits of heat pumps?

My Saturday afternoon spent swimming in the Willamette River was facilitated by a massive infrastructure project that was only undertaken because of a lawsuit under the Clean Water Act. The rollback of environmental laws will have long-reaching effects in ways that most people will never understand

If I have to explain to you why it's a bad idea to use a machine that makes shit up 15-80% of the time AND destroys the environment AND contributes to rising fascism and genocide AND puts brilliant skillful creatives out of work by stealing their work, then we're already speaking different languages

I am having trouble reconciling the DOE I was a Fellow for a mere 5 months ago with the DOE as it exists now. It’s so disorienting.

Global emissions from heating are about 4x those from cooling. Air conditioning is an important and lifesaving adaptation to climate change. Decarbonize the grid.
Graph showing global carbon emissions from heating vs cooling. Heating is about 4 billion tonnes CO2e/year; cooling is about 1. Source https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/co2-heating-cooling

The concept of energy burden needs to be talked about in terms of total household expenditures, i.e. housing+transportation, to be able to illustrate that displacing total fossil fuel use is beneficial. I mostly see them discussed separately.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

As the wife of a naturalized citizen, this is crazy. It cannot be the case that Congress people call for denaturalization proceedings based on political differences.

I was reminded this morning of the cost of changing your mind when you come from high-control conservative cultures and places. Those tiny groups of people protesting in small, rural places are paying a social cost. Sending thanks for their willingness to speak out.

Spending the majority of Memorial Day weekend cleaning out the garage and I, whose children are 8, 14, and 17, have had to negotiate over the number of sticks, rocks, and soccer balls we can keep. So no, the stick thing never, ever ends.

All people should have reproductive choice. I am also noticing that fewer people being parents leads to gaps in empathy for families and understanding of childhood. It’s easy to forget what 0-6 year old children are like if you are never around them and you can’t even remember yourself at that age.

My children have been insured by Medicaid, through the Oregon Health Plan, for nearly 7 years until this month, when we could finally afford to insure them under my new job. The OHP gave us life-saving access to care when we could not afford it. #medicaid

Could Stewart be referring to congressional hearings about the 9-11 legislation he worked on? Obviously that is not a notice-and-comment rulemaking. Not making the distinction to the audience makes Klein’s arguments illegible and useless.

Definitely conflating local zoning/planning processes with federal or state level processes for other kinds of regulations. In my field, electricity regulation, local, state, and federal regs often all apply and imprecise descriptions do not help people understand who is responsible for what.

I graduated a year ago, I was meant to start repaying my student loans 10/24 but I applied for IDR and they have been sitting in limbo since. I have no idea when I will be required to repay them and no idea what the amount will be. How does my family make a financial plan like this?? #studentloans
