I’m signing legislation to strengthen independent journalism and help qualifying local news organizations hire and retain journalists in California. A free press isn't supposed to make government comfortable, it’s supposed to make government accountable.

Incidentally, Burnham referring to the two previous conference votes on proportional representation is a tribute to the diligent work of campaigners in the party. They worked extremely hard to build a base of support in Labour, against the odds.

If people don't want to pay tax to make this country function and help out the rest of society and particularly those who need help most... then maybe they should move to Dubai and stop bleating about it. Really sick to death of it.

They think you’ll fall for it again. From weasel words to vanishing party names, the oldest political trick is still alive: say anything, hide everything. Every election, parties put out glossy leaflets telling you what matters. But it’s your job to decide – not theirs. Peter Thurlow explains
