Tried to pick the games that shaped me fairly early on but I feel like I'm constantly getting shaped by new games, they really have become one of the most influential forms of media in my life. Still I'd say this lot had a damn strong impact.

I like this bird. There really isn't much wildlife in Kyoto but this bird turns up every so often by the riverbank and it's just a nice little detail.

And yes I do see the irony that once again my favourite Onimusha villain is the creepy scientist, and while she is definitely her own unique character it is very clear to see the parallels between her and Guildenstern in her introduction. God I need fanart of these two working together so badly.

Dokyo is a FANTASTIC antagonist and one of the best characters in the game! I love her theatrical mad scientist role and how she's a constant threat from her introduction onwards, in both the main story and side quests. Every time I think I've seen her best moment she drops another bombshell!

I am so sick of fighting this guy. Way Of The Sword has a problem with repeating bosses, especially in the endgame, but the reappearances of this mini boss got annoying very quick. And worse is that an item drop from him is needed to upgrade the gauntlet, making him feel like even more of a chore.

This is the best puzzle in the game. And the only one of its kind. The closest we get elsewhere is a few short and simple block moving areas or 'find and cut the end of the thread' sections. ... I miss the code boxes 😭

THERE IS NO DARK REALM! NONE! NOT EVEN A PHANTOM REALM! Considering the number of comments I've seen complaining about the game being too easy, I'd have thought a multi-level enemy gauntlet would have been an easy sell but apparently not. That is disrespect to the seaweed man.

One thing I was going to say about the new Onimusha is that the loading times are pretty good, haven't really had to wait around between cutscenes or when fast travelling. Until now. ... It's been nearly 15 minutes 😑

Overall I am extremely happy with the genma design in Onimusha: Way Of The Sword, both the reinterpretations of old genma and the completely new ones (plus obviously the bosses), but god damn these guys are kind of extra. I mean look at how they dramatically pose on distant rooftops, I love it!

I also think that her Kyoto Mysteries are the best bits of side content so far. I'm still conflicted on the open world aspects of the game in general (will definitely be unpacking that more when I finish it) but following these little stories do make the world feel more alive.

Biggest complaint so far is the lack of puzzles. We've had some changing the environment with our oni powers and 'block' puzzles (as in just moving a block up or down) but no levers or code boxes or anything like that. Again it's still early, but I'm really feeling their loss.

Bosses steal the show, as they rightly should. Only faced 4 so far but they all have great designs and those that speak are bursting with personality. And we're even getting some disturbing antics from them. Again I don't want to spoil too much but... this is a victim of one of the bosses.

You can't save people. There were moments in the original games where NPCs were fighting with Genma and if you were quick enough you could save them. I thought that would be the same here with all these people running away from the Genma but nope.

The game asks for your age when you first start it up. I don't know if this is just for statistics or what as it says it doesn't affect the content but there is a part of me that wonders what would happen if you put an age below 18 in. Would it believe I am a 1 year old and ban me from playing?

Knocking over lanterns and torchs does in fact set things on fire. Fire hurts. Don't burn yourself. Full disclosure I played this demo twice to try both difficulties. On my first playthrough I discoverd the fire thing accidentally but on the second one my inner arsonist was awoken.

I'm now going to randomly point out some things that I noticed but don't have anything meaningful to say about. There are environmental actions you can do during combat, such as pushing a cart or making an impromptu shield. That's pretty neat.

That's about it for my coherent feedback, again the demo was incredibly short so there's only so much to go on, but I'm very happy with what I see so far. There are changes but it feels like Onimusha and that's what I wanted, very excited to see the full game and I recommend trying the demo.

The art-direction in general is beautiful! Still leaning towards realism in a lot of places, meaning it does look quite somber overall compared to the original series but there are still lovely uses of colours and the designs look great, especially in the cutscenes.

Speaking of the Genma, THEY LOOK SO COOL!!! After the horribly bland designs from the Netflix series I am pleased to say these Genma all look fantastic. You can see how many of them are reimaginings of previous designs but they still have their own flare. So happy they were done well.

Ganryu, our boss for the demo, also has a fun personality in his short appearance so I'm curious to see more of him. And I like the choice of having regular Genma being able to talk this time, not just the bosses. The personality of the Genma was a highlight of the series so more is always great.

As for the plot... again there's not enough to judge yet. I will say I like Musashi so far. He's a bit more gritty and snarky than previous protagonists (though Jubei certainly had some zingers) and I'm not certain about this whole 'unwilling oni warrior' idea yet, but he's certainly fun to play as.

The demo isn't very long so it's harder to grasp what the puzzles are going to be like. There weren't really any puzzles beyond following red thread to unblock doorways but I'm hopeful that the full game will include some interesting ones like the original games (maybe not the water puzzle though).
