Israelis for Peace NYC - who are near and dear to my heart - held a vigil in which they read testimonies and eulogies of both Israelis & Palestinians on this incredibly difficult night. It's not for everyone, but to have it disrupted in this way is absolutely shameful.

What I find surprising about the cornell lawsuit is that the "free pussy" post happened in 2024. Straight women have been told for the last decade that men are afraid to approach or court women anymore because of MeToo. Yet they're unafraid of gang bangs and running a train?

I think the problem is that for whatever reason, society/the media/whoever have correctly determined we need a way to reintegrate millions of people into society and from that incorrectly determined the way to do so is for the people who were wronged to apologize to the people who wronged them.

I see a commonly repeated sentiment on Bluesky, the website for 38 year olds, that says everyone was excited by the advent of the Internet in a way that far exceeds any excitement for gen AI/LLMs. The thing is, that's not strictly true.

This was never intended to be some awe-inspiring demonstration of the magnificent power of LLMs. If anything it's almost the opposite. A computer that is bad at math is, as many have observed, laughable. But SSPH implies that it should be *even worse* at math than it observably is. That's the point.

Let me just explain the arithmetic thing real quick; I'm seeing a lot of people not understanding what it's supposed to show (or was supposed to show in 2023). First, let's agree that an LLM is a Stochastic Parrot, a description which I find poetic, useful, informative, and basically correct.

When you encounter these sorts of people and try (no matter how politely) to explain some of the things about LLMs that they do not understand, they frequently become hostile and abusive. No matter how you may feel about LLMs, the fact that you USED them means that you must be punished.

You don't have to use LLMs or harnesses or agents. In fact, if you can avoid it I envy you. But many software developers have been forced or cajoled into AI coding over the last year. Claude is MORE effective than many of us would have liked yet less effective than Dario & boosters hope.

This debate about whether "AI works" reminds me of how people who don't use Facebook are convinced that no one needs FB. Vibe is: I and my friends don't find value in it, also you're an idiot for using it. If you often insult the users of a product they're unlikely to talk about it around you.

this is more important than niche internet arguments make it seem: if LLMs don't work, who cares that Palantir is rolling it out for surveillance? Hell, maybe it's even good, if the state's machines start hallucinating the addresses of random Trump supporters when dispatching ICE. But they do work.

“No they really believe it” is a way better heuristic for understanding political actors than “they are on the take” 9 times out of 10. Sometimes beliefs are downstream of materialism and political economy. But these relationships are more complicated than “bribes”

The LLM majors in America are often bad faith actors. The social consequences of mass compute, prediction, and function in many professional knowledge processing is serious. And some of the most prominent critics of this technology do not have the basic technical and academic familiarity with them.

Ballpoint pen on paper. A man in his PJs is tucked into his bed. He's upset because the bed has been lifted off the ground by a pack of small, mischievous creatures. We can only see 9 of them in the image but there are likely many more since they're all working together to lift the heavy bed frame. As the creatures run with the bed they chant, "hup hup hup hup hup hup hup hup hup." The man in the bed wants no part of this. "Put me down. No more hups," he says. It's unclear where they are going or what is happening. There is no punchline. There is little to no context. You're either with the hup team or you're out. Thank you for reading these.

“Bongo” Ballpoint pen, pencil, watercolor, acrylic paint, and a little colored pencil.

Our man is in trouble this time, reader. Art supplies are scattered around a painting of an abstract cityscape. On the canvas we see a man in a telephone booth making a frantic call to his cat, Bongo. In the foreground, an answering machine is taking his voicemail, [Leave a message at the beep] --- “Bongo, Daddy got stuck in the painting. Go get help, Bongo.” Bongo stands at the base of the easel looking at the phone. Her tail in the air and ears perked up. Whether she’ll be able to help is open to interpretation.

Artist’s note: One of my favorites from the Spooky Pants book. I was playing around with the idea of a painting coming to life (like that guy in Ghostbusters 2) and kind of fumbled my way into this version. I really draw a lot of corded phones. I won’t stop.
