Photographed by Stéphane Barbery, this portrait captures Noh actor Matsuno Hiroyuki portraying Shizuka Gozen in the classical drama Funabenkei (船弁慶).
In deep monochrome contrast, a Noh actor partially reveals a serene, sculpted Noh mask from behind a painted folding fan (ōgi). Crowned with a black ceremonial tate-eboshi cap and wearing a lavishly woven karaori robe, the performer holds the fan—adorned with delicate chrysanthemums and cherry blossoms—to frame half his face in quiet contemplation. The intricate geometric patterns, tortoiseshell motifs, and maple leaves embroidered into the silk create a tactile interplay of luster and deep shadow against the dark background, drawing the eye into a space of dramatic tension. The smooth, lacquered surface of the mask catches the light, isolating the figure in a moment of stillness.
his portrait captures Noh actor Matsuno Hiroyuki portraying Shizuka Gozen in the classical drama Funabenkei (船弁慶). Authored by Kanze Kojirō Nobumitsu, the play recounts the heartbreaking separation of warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune from his mistress Shizuka Gozen, followed by a sea voyage disrupted by the vengeful ghost of Taira no Tomomori. In the opening act, Shizuka Gozen performs a farewell dance to pray for Yoshitsune's safety, conveying both sorrow and quiet dignity. The carved cypress mask (hinoki) and Nishijin brocade karaori robe represent the heritage of Japanese monozukuri (traditional artisanal craftsmanship), preserving centuries-old techniques of textile and mask design.

Woman Looking at Herself in a Mirror Katsushika Hokusai 1805 (Bunka 2) MEDIUM/TECHNIQUEHanging scroll; ink, color, gold, and mica on silk CREDIT LINEWilliam Sturgis Bigelow Collection
Standing tall with her back turned toward the viewer, a statuesque beauty (bijin) bends gently toward a black-lacquered vanity chest (kyōdai), her delicate hand poised behind her head as she adjusts a comb within her jet-black hair. She wears a sweeping grey silk kimono adorned with a subtle, repeating floral pattern, secured by a rich rust-red obi emblazoned with circular blossom motifs. Her exposed white nape (eri-ashi) creates a striking visual focal point above the low-slung collar of her garment. At the base of the composition, a large circular hand mirror mounted on the vanity catches her face in dramatic reflection, revealing her pale skin, soft red lips, and focused gaze illuminated by the faint shimmer of mica and gold leaf embedded in the silk. The image evokes the quiet intimacy of a private boudoir: the smooth texture of polished lacquer, the soft rustle of trailing silk hems, and the still air of a personal ritual.
Painted in 1805 (Bunka 2) by the legendary master Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849), this hanging scroll (kakemono) belongs to the genre of nikkufu-de bijinga—original, hand-painted depictions of beautiful women on silk, as opposed to mass-produced woodblock prints. Created during Hokusai's middle period, when he produced some of his most elegant character studies prior to his world-renowned landscape series, the work showcases the artist's consummate mastery of human anatomy, textile drapery, and spatial framing. The inclusion of a calligraphic poem above the vanity adds a literary dimension, inviting the viewer to contemplate the emotional state of a woman preparing for or awaiting a lover. Executed with mineral pigments, ink, gold, and mica on fine silk, the painting demonstrates the pinnacle of Edo-period painting monozukuri (artisanal mastery in fine art), combining delicate brushwork with sophisticated material techniques.

Debut of maiko Satohina. Photography by Onidide on Flickr
Captured in elegant profile against a dark, slatted wooden screen, a newly debuting maiko bows gently in her formal ensemble. Her stark white oshiroi makeup coats her face and neck, creating a striking contrast with her jet-black, sculpted coiffure and the deep black field of her formal trailing kimono (hikizuri) decorated with graphic wave and pine motifs. Hair adornments (kanzashi) crown her head, featuring a fluttering silver bira-bira pin over her temple, warm amber-toned tortoiseshell picks, a polished red coral bead, and a scarlet silk kanoko pad tied around the base of her topknot. The delicate curve of her downcast profile, the gleam of metallic ornaments, and the soft red embroidery of her inner collar invoke a intimate sensory atmosphere: the soft rustle of heavy silk layers, the faint fragrance of camellia hair oil, and the quiet reverence of a formal greeting.
Photographed by Onidide, this portrait documents maiko Satohina during her misedashi—the official debut ceremony marking an apprentice's formal entry into Kyoto's traditional hanamachi (flower towns). The milestone demands a highly codified wardrobe, most notably the formal black kuro-hikizuri paired with a heavily embroidered red collar (han'eri) that signifies her junior rank. Her hair is sculpted into the waeshima hairstyle, a specialized traditional coiffure reserved exclusively for formal occasions like debut rites. The assembly of such an ensemble represents the living heritage of Japanese monozukuri (artisanal craft and technical mastery), synthesizing the expertise of traditional hairdressers (kamiyui), silk weavers, yūzen dyers, and metal craftsmen who maintain centuries of material tradition.
