And 02. Local and civic information environments: tools for distributing local news, building community knowledge, and facilitating collecting sensemaking — new ways for people to get trustworthy information about their communities.

And we’re looking for folks exploring in two areas: 01. Humans connecting to humans: products that bring people into meaningful contact online, including forums, messaging apps, groups, microblogging, and in-person meetups. This can include AI, if it connects people to people not people to bots...

The EIR program application deadline is TOMORROW. The details as a reminder👇🏽 Applications due 11:59pm PT on Wed, Sep 9. This is a pilot program! We're selecting two entrepreneurs who want time, space, and mentorship to move from hunch to conviction over three (3) months.

P.S. I get that the part about AI stewardship gives you the ick. I personally don't want AI to replace stewards. Support them, yes. People who steward communities also absorb soo much work. Trying to be thoughtful about how well-designed stewardship tools (including AI) can prevent THEIR burnout.

What did you feel was missing @thisismissem.social. Genuinely curious as a co-author. I put this out there to start a conversation, not be THE definitive take on AI + social.

Local community and connection + elections sounds promising! But we're trying to support folks at the -1 to 0 stage, so before they have a built and launched application. Is there a hunch you're exploring that hasn't gone live yet.

Not gonna pretend we have it all figured out: This is a pilot program, after all. But if you're a builder with a hunch in our two focus areas: Humans connecting to humans & Local and civic information environments. Consider applying to be an Entrepreneur in Residence at New_ Public this fall.

What if you — yes YOU! — had some time to slow it down and explore and figure out what products, platforms, movements are needed. Desirable, viable, feasible. That whole thing.

Really excited to share this application with the world today. I'm designing this program for this moment specifically. The dominant social platforms suck. There are a lot of bright spots with people experimenting and building new things. But also, tech and AI is moving so fast!

Waking up to @bimade.bsky.social yesterday as the new voice of The Seven from WaPo was a delight and a joy. It gave me Another Round feels. Like Tracy and Bim and Heben just kickin it. Different vibe, sure. But love hearing a familiar voice.

New Public came to the same conclusion as the personhood credentials paper authors: The alternative to hardening human spaces against agents (essentially impossible) or surrendering the internet to bots and cynicism (depressing) is a hybrid shared environment with explicit rules...

New Public’s recent work on the dawning agentic interface era emphasizes the coming governance challenge: shared online spaces are now places where humans, transparent agents and “dark agents” coexist.

Social media is already being transformed by the prevalence of bots, the proliferation of AI slop and increased user skepticism when dealing with content and communication from strangers."

Eli Pariser, who wrote “The Filter Bubble: What The Internet Is Hiding From You” and now runs nonprofit research lab New Public, has begun interrogating our agentic future as well.

Renee DiResta recently argued in Noema that we need a way to prove personhood online. And quoted Eli and my work calling for civil society and industry to do the work to create and govern a shared human-agent internet. www.noemamag.com/we-need-a-wa...

We Need A Way To Prove Personhood Online | NOEMA
The growing number of AI agents roaming the internet will eventually force us to verify what the old web mostly presumed: that there is a morally and legally accountable person somewhere in the chain.

I've been rooting for Agentina in the Mundial since 2010. USMNT since 🤷🏽‍♀️. Colombia since this year cause we've got a Colombia fan in our lives. But that's kind what I love about the World Cup. It can be patriotic but it can also be about the beautiful game and the story of these players and teams.

Uncivil language that's directed upward is part of a healthy democracy. And the moderation tools we've built for public conversation with public broadcasters make that distinction. This feels like an especially important distinction on the eve of America's 250th 🇺🇸

I've been immensely inspired by @ericries.bsky.social new book Incorruptible. He points out that you can literally taste the difference when private equity buys your favorite restaurant chain, and offers recommendations for entreprenuers who want to avoid a similar fate.

The guy starting a pizza restaurant didn't set out to make trash pizza. And the entrepreneur building a new social app or consumer product, usually doesn't set out to eXtrAcT mAxiMuM vAlUe fOr tHeiR sHaRehOLdErs. But financial gravity often pushes them in that direction.
