Just did some number crunching using latest (Oct 1) ECMWF seasonal data, and I must say that I've never seen such high predictive confidence in a very wet California winter. This is a truly extraordinary forecast amid a record-strength El Niño event. [Thread: please read to end.]
Model-relative sea surface temperature anomalies for November 2026–January 2027. The supplied grid is displayed without added smoothing or coastal filling. Beige marks land and gray marks missing ocean values. The main colour scale spans -2 to +10°F, with white at zero. Hot pink marks anomalies above +10°F. This map does not establish an operational ENSO category.

Kids today will never understand that eating a muffin in the 70s was a groan-inducing endeavor. Muffins back then were hockey pucks made of bran or corn & you ate it for your health. No one asked you if you wanted it warmed up. You choked it down cold like a good little boy or girl.

Given rising interest in the rapidly strengthening El Niño event in the tropical Pacific Ocean, I've created a one-page fact sheet succinctly describing what El Niño is, this year's (remarkable) forecast, and potential impacts from California to global scales. [Thread]
JPEG version of a 1-page Factsheet: El Niño 2026-2027: A Potentially Historic Global Climate Event
By Daniel Swain, PhD | August 2026

There is a banner image depicting projected warming of the Pacific Ocean by early winter.

The content begins:
"What is El Niño?
El Niño is the warm phase of a natural cycle, known as El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO), that occurs roughly every 2-7 years in the tropical Pacific Ocean. During El Niño events, the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean warms to well above typical levels. El Niño directly affects local climate in the countries closest to the unusually warm ocean waters, but can also indirectly influence the climate of distant regions thousands of miles away. During the strongest events, El Niño can profoundly affect climate even on global scales, causing temporary planetary warming and disrupting large-scale precipitation patterns..."

Humans respond to danger by searching for patterns to find how to be safe. We find patterns in random distributions b/c it makes us feel safer. Feeling out of control increases illusory pattern perception. Earthquakes make most of us feel we lack control. psycnet.apa.org/doi/10.1126/...

This Dylanologist gives "A Complete Unknown" 4.5⭐s. It doesn't stick strictly to facts but pacing is excellent & it never goes more than 2 minutes w/out music. Chalamet did a great job evoking Dylan's laconic spirit, right down to the freakishly long fingernails. The audience burst into applause!
