📚 Just Finished: Kinfolk 🏡🏡🏡🏡 … Set in a small town in Alabama, full of Southern charm, really great one-liners & many old time country music references. Fun read with lots of heart.
Book Cover: Kinfolk, written by Sean Dietrich. One really needs to read this while sipping on a glass of sweet iced tea or sitting on a bar stool at Waffle House. 😊 There were so many laugh out loud one-liners in this book…made it such a fun read, at least for those who love all things Southern.

(As a heads up, there is a trigger warning ⚠️ for familial suicide. That being said, the author himself grew up a child of suicide at 11, so the subject is handled in the most empathetic way, imo.)Back Book Cover: Kinfolk, written by Sean Dietrich. “1970s, Southern Alabama. Sixty-two-year-old Jeremiah Lewis Taylor, or "Nub," has spent his whole life listening to those he loves tell him he's no good-first his ex-wife, now his always-disapproving daughter. Sure, his escapades have made him, along with his cousin and perennial sidekick, Benny, just a smidge too familiar with small-town law enforcement, but he's never harmed anyone-except perhaps himself.

Nub never meant to change his ways, but when he and fifteen-year-old Waffle House waitress Minnie form an unlikely friendship, he realizes for the first time that there may be some good in him after all. Six-foot-five Minnie has been dealt a full deck of bad luck-her father is a convicted murderer serving a life sentence, her mother is dead and buried, and she has a Grand Ole Opry-worthy singing voice with no place to perform. Oh, and there's the small fact that she's unexpectedly pregnant, courtesy of a no-good high-school boy.

Gradually, Nub realizes the gift he's been given: a second chance to make a difference.

Beloved Southern writer Sean Dietrich, also known as Sean of the South, once again brings people and places to life in this lyrical song-turned-story about found family. second chances, country music, and the poignant power of love and forgiveness.”

Louie, Louie, Louie 🎶 … my friend’s dog who, from the beginning, claimed ownership of the quilt I made for his mom. 💙🐶
Louie, one of my friend’s 2 Shih Tzu pals, sitting pretty on a lovely velvety chair with his quilt hanging in the chair’s back. The Kaleidoscope pattern quilt I made for my friend while she was battling breast cancer. She’s still battling 3 years later, having been diagnosed with secondary leukemia last year. This quilt, along with another I’ve made for her, have been on such a long journey to get well. Next, a bone marrow transplant. Warrior.

📍 Progress… sometimes it’s slow, but it’s still progress.
Suzanne’s quilt: the inner section of the quilt top has been pieced. Now, waiting on Suzanne to select rest of fabric (small border around this section, quilt backing & the binding fabrics) to continue. We’re targeting 10/13 for a trip to the fabric shop, working around Suzanne’s travel schedule). (She’s the busiest “retired” person on this planet!)A fuller view of the pieces inner section of the quilt top. It’s the same pattern as the two others I’ve made (see prior post), but fabrics make such a huge difference on the final quilt! We’ll have all 3 to compare, hopefully by 10/31, so I can start a new project. 😊 (I’ve got 3 quilt kits waiting to get started!)

📚 Finished Last Night: The Queens Of Crime 🕵️🕵️🕵️🫆…our Book Club 📖…historical fiction/crime mystery about lady sleuths in the Golden Age 1930s UK, including Agatha Christie & friends. Actual murder of nurse was never solved in real life.
Book Cover: The Queens Of Crime, written by Marie Benedict. Gets off to a bit of a slow start, but I couldn’t help (and relate) to these determined ladies. Pace quickens & ladies are unique personalities that resonate. Reading this book, I couldn’t help but think about the recent Cornell situation in the news and see the parallels of how women crime victims are often treated (vilified, quickly dispatched), despite decades since the 1930 timeframe in this book. 😕 😡Insert Book Cover: The Queens Of Crime, written by Marie Benedict. “LONDON. 1930 The five greatest women crime writers have banded together to form a secret society with a single goal: to show they are no longer willing to be treated as second-class citizens by their male counterparts in the legendary Detection Club. Led by the formidable Dorothy Sayers, the group includes Agatha Christie, Ngaio Marsh, Margery Allingham, and Baroness Emma Orczy. They call themselves the Queens of Crime. Their plan?
Solve an actual murder, that of a young woman found strangled in a park in France who may have connections leading to the highest levels of the British establishment.

May Daniels, a young English nurse on an excursion to France, seems to have vanished into thin air as she prepared to board a ferry home. Months later, her body is found in the nearby woods. The murder has all the hallmarks of a locked-room mystery, for which these authors are famous. Determined to solve the highly publicized death, the Queens of Crime embark on their own investigation, discovering they are stronger together. But soon the killer targets Dorothy Sayers herself, threatening to expose a dark secret in her past that she would do anything to keep hidden.

Inspired by a true story in Sayers's own life, New York Times bestselling author Marie Benedict brings to life the lengths to which five talented women will go to be taken seriously in the male-dominated world of letters as they unpuzzle a mystery torn from the pages of their own novels.”

📍 Vinyl Project Bag Class … only thing saving this are my 2 models, Raphi 🐈 & Maddie 🐈‍⬛. 🫤
Took a vinyl project bag 4 hour class this past Friday. If I never sew anything vinyl again, I’ll be happy. What a… challenge (disaster, tbh). Here, for perspective, you can see the pictures of Raphi & Maddie underneath the clear/checkerboard pattern vinyl. I took the class to learn how to sew zippers, so at least I have a good idea how that’s done. There’s the silver lining. 🙃

I’ll probably attempt this again at home to “master” this a bit better…and use up the class supplies I’d purchased. Hopefully, now that I know all the trouble points, I figure out a way to mitigate them. Ugh.Here’s the back of the bag…nothing to write home about. 🤭

👩‍🍳 Dinner Tonight: I channeled my inner cat. 🐈‍⬛ 🐟 🐈 🐟
Very pretty box of unopened Fishwife brand tin of sardines 🐟 with preserved lemon. 🍋 My 1st time to try this brand - quality, freshness definitely worth the extra cost. Tonight’s dinner of tinned sardines 🐟 in preserved lemon 🍋 on open-faced toasted baguette 🥖 slices. Added a bit of Lemon Caper Sauce on top. So good. The cats 🐈‍⬛ 🐈 were circling!

👩‍🍳 Dinner Tonight: … roasted veggies & chicken/apple sausage on toasted baguette. 🥖
Ready to go into the oven: Sliced carrots 🥕 , onion 🧅 , cherry tomatoes 🍅, yellow/orange/red mini bell peppers 🫑 coated with EVOO, S&P, Italian seasoning. And two chicken-apple sausages. A smidgeon balsamic vinegar glaze on top of all. Toasted baguette 🥖 sliced in half, mayo on one, brown mustard on the other. Each topped with roasted veggies and 1/2 of a chicken/apple sausage. Delicious! Equal portion leftovers in the fridge for tomorrow’s dinner since I have a 4-hr quilting class & know I won’t feel like cooking. 📚 Just Finished: Call Me By Your Name 👨‍❤️‍👨👨‍❤️‍👨👨‍❤️‍👨🫶…love is love, as is said. The angst of first love is universal, and in a setting like Italy, even more intense & unforgettable.
Book Cover: Call Me By Your Name, written by Andre Aciman. I’m not sure how I stumbled upon this 2 book set (read them out of order, accidentally, which made things so confusing — other book was “Fine Me”, which I read & posted about a short while ago). First loves are confusing enough, these books really impressed upon me how much more so it must be if one is not sure about their sexuality. Beautifully written. Back Book Cover: Call Me By Your Name, written by Andre Aciman. “During a restless summer on the Italian Riviera, a powerful romance blooms between seventeen-year-old Elio and his father's house guest, Oliver. Unrelenting currents of obsession and fear, fascination and desire threaten to overwhelm the lovers who at first feign indifference to the charge between them.

What grows from the depths of their souls is a romance of scarcely six weeks' duration, and an experience that marks them for a life-time. For what the two discover on the Riviera and during a sultry evening in Rome is the one thing they both already fear they may never truly find again: total intimacy.”

📚 Finished Last Night: Rabbit Cake 🐰🐰🐰🍥 … a very quirky family working through the death of the mom, as told by Elvis, youngest daughter, in her 12 yr old voice. An oddly funny, lighthearted journey about death, grieving & sadness.
Book Cover: Rabbit Cake, written by Annie Hartnett. I needed a lighter read, and this one hit the mark. Often silly, but with insights into the grieving journey. Weaved throughout is a love of animals, all kinds, especially Boomer the faithful family dog 🐕 , and Ernest Hemingway, the parrot 🦜 that oddly sounds just like their deceased mother. You’ll learn a lot about naked mole rats 🐀 too … and sleepwalking. Did I mention quirky? Back Cover: Rabbit Cake, written by Annie Hartnett. “Twelve-year-old Elvis Babbitt has a head for facts: she knows science proves that yellow is the happiest color, a healthy male giraffe weighs about 3,000 pounds, and the naked mole rat is the longest living rodent. She knows she should plan to grieve her mother, who recently drowned while sleepwalking, for exactly eighteen months. But there are things Elvis doesn't yet know. As she investigates the strange circumstances of her mother's death, Elvis finds comfort - if not answers — in the people (and animals) of Freedom, Alabama.”

📚 Just Finished: Find Me … more like ‘help me’ (I’m very confused).
Book Cover: Find Me, written by Andre Aciman. So, this is one of a two-book set. I’m very confused after reading this one; having difficulty knowing who is who & how they relate to each other as I’m reading the seductive love story segments amongst various characters. Maybe after I read 2nd book it will all become clearer? Ugh. (I may have read the 2nd book 1st which is contributing my confusion🤷‍♀️).

Think I’ll read a totally unrelated book before I tackle the 2nd one in this set. Back Book Cover: Find Me, written by Andre Aciman. “Elio believes he has left behind his first love - but as an affair with an older man intensifies, his thoughts turn to the past and to Oliver.
Oliver, a college professor, husband and father, is preparing to leave New York. The imminent trip stirs up longing and regret, awakening an old desire, propelling him towards a decision that could change everything.

In Call Me By Your Name, we fell in love with Oliver and Elio. Find Me returns to these unforgettable characters, exploring how love can ripple out from the past and into the future.”

Remembering. 😔
25 years later & I still remember and feel the horror and fear of this day. Today, continued mourning those lost, their families, and those touched from illnesses, mental & physical, from breathing the air and seeing the devastation on the ground. So much lost that day, and so many that stepped up for our country afterwards…I yearn for that feeling of unity.

Finished Last Night: The Enchantment Of Lily Dahl 🫆🫆🫆… this was a strange read; dark, moody setting in small town Minnesota. A 19 yr old waitress aspiring to be an actress, chases both a murder mystery & an older artist who comes to town.
Book Cover: The Enchantment Of Lily Dahl, written by Siri Hustvedt. I do really like this author; this was very different from her previous two books I recently read. Still good, but not quite my thing … although this one too features strong women characters, which I like. Also, I noted that this is an earlier book of hers, so maybe that’s part of why I like her later books more? In any case, this was good, just not great, for me.Back Book Cover: The Enchantment Of Lily Dahl, written by Siri Hustvedt. “The protagonist of Siri Hustvedt’s astonishing second novel is a heroine of the old style: tough, beautiful, and brave. Standing at the threshold of adulthood, she finds herself tested by circumstance and poised before a new world of erotic adventure, profound but unexpected friendship, and inexplicable, frightening acts of madness. Lily's story is also the story of a small town—Webster, Minnesota-where people are brought together by a powerful sense of place, both geographical and spiritual. Here gossip, secrets, and storytelling are as essential to the bond among its people as the borders that enclose the town. The real secret at the heart of the book is the one that lies between reality and appearances, between waking life and dreams, at the place where imagination draws on its transforming powers in the face of death.”

📚 Finished Last Night: Contacts 📴 📲 📴 … James sends all his 158 phone Contacts an e-mail with his last goodbye & panic ensues. Sad really, the loss of real & even casual connection despite these devices in our hands all day long.
Book Cover: Contacts, written by Mark Watson. (⚠️ Suicide trigger warning.) A sad, sometimes with a bit of humor thrown in, story about the power of loneliness to throw someone into utter despair. The irony is that never has it been easier to reach out, but we often don’t. I’m certainly guilty of this. Actual human connection , front porches, block parties, would solve so many of the issues in this crazy, sad world, imo. Back Book Cover: Contacts, written by Mark Watson. “At five to midnight in Euston Station, James Chiltern sends one text to all 158 people in his contacts. A message saying goodbye.
Five minutes later, with two pork pies and a packet of chocolate digestives in his pocket, he disappears.

Across the world, 158 phones light up.
Phones belonging to James's friends, his family, people he's lost touch with. All of them now wondering, where has James gone? What happened to him? And more importantly, can they find him before it's too late?”

Look at the birdie!! This is RadioFlyer … you should have heard the singing!!! 🎶 Here’s the lovely story about RadioFlyer, momma & their very positive message: “I am a FREE
BIRD... I live up here, atop of the cage. My name is RadioFlyer, it is nice to
meet you. My days up here atop of the cage are great.

Thank you for letting me sing my song. My mom lives in the cage underneath here. She kicked me out of the house when I turned 18. We still hang out and she helps me with multiple bird problems.

I enjoy flying to and from the top of the cage and the top of the warehouse ceiling. I appreciate all the customers that spend time with me. Thank you for stopping for a moment to read my story. Not everybody has the time to enjoy a moment with me. My life began here at Kiss It, and I have enjoyed my days living here. I enjoy 80s music and funk. I like to sing along with the music. Sometimes, you will catch me dancing.

Remember to enjoy this day, because you do not live in a cage. You are free! Free to express yourself. Free to decorate your home in the way that you want to. Free to read the signs, and free to dance and sing along with me... Thank you for coming in here and taking a gander at all that Kiss It Good Buy has to offer. I know that, one day, you will find the perfect piece for your home, and l am just happy to be the bird that wrote you this message of inspiration, freedom, love, and pure artistic self expression. It is up to you to be yourself. No one else could ever be that specific you that you bring to the table. Let’s celebrate life and sing this song in which we sing, together, united in harmonic expression. Peace and love to you and all your kin. I write this here, atop my cage, in effort to bring the peace into your home that you have willed to create within. The peace in prayerspeak is strong, and that is also why I sing my song. It is for the joy that I bring and this is my prayer of peace I offer to you, heart to heart. With love, I hope that you enjoy your day. Let us know if you have any questions. Thank you, Please feel free t…This is RadioFlyer’s mom … she is so pretty, and making sure to look her best by preening in her mirror.

🎈50 Is Great & We Need To Celebrate! … that’s what I told my bestie birthday neighbor. We had the most lovely brunch date yesterday.
I was the designated driver, so she enjoyed the birthday Bellini 🍑🥂. And, since she has a fancypants Persian kitty, (Luna that I’ve posted about in the past), the birthday card was purr-fection. Just having quality bestie time is really nice. We both had the Avocado 🥑 toast brunch thingy. It was fantastic, but we both thought the plating of the whipped goat cheese on the right side of the plate was … sad. 🤭 We got past the visual though, and dove right in! Here’s the description of this delight:

Book Cover: Whistler, written by Ann Patchett. Oh my goodness, I read the entire book over a span of only 2 days. Beautifully written and a testament to how important human connection can be, young or old, male or female, family or found family. I really loved this book. Book Cover Insert: Whistler, written by Ann Patchett. “When Daphne Fuller and her husband, Jonathan, visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art, they notice an older, white-haired gentleman following them. The man turns out to be Eddie Triplett, her former stepfather, who was married to her mother for a little more than a year when Daphne was nine. Now fifty-three, Daphne hasn't seen Eddie for many years, not since the fateful event that changed the direction of both their lives. When they meet again, time falls away; while their relationship was brief, it had a profound impact on them both, and now that they are reunited, they have no intention of ever being separated again.

Whistler is a story about two adults looking back over the choices they made and the choices that were made for them. It's a story about bravery, memory, the often small yet consequential moments that define our lives, and the endless stream of loss that in time comes for us all. Beautiful in its simplicity, Whistler is ultimately about how love endures, and how the feeling of being known by one other person, even for a short period of time, can change everything.

👩‍🍳 Pasta Salad - Lots Of Pasta Salad…I always manage make too much. 🤭 But it’s really good & gets better as it sits longer.🥗
A very large bowl of pasta salad pre-stirred. Let’s see, lots of diced:

Grape tomatoes, celery, red onion, pickles, ham, Colby Jack & cheddar cheese, hard boiled eggs. A very large bowl of pasta salad all stirred together. Grape tomatoes, celery, red onion, pickles, ham, Colby Jack & cheddar cheese, hard boiled eggs. Drenched with dressing made of the bread & butter jar pickle juice, Hellmans mayo, brown mustard, S&P. I’ll be eating this for the next several days — morning, noon & night. Already gave a nice sized bowl to neighbor bestie for lunch, because sharing is caring (and there’s only so much pasta salad one can eat in a week 🤭!) 🥗

I drank my usual coffee while working in this one, not wine 🤭. You really have to look for the cats in this puzzle, but they’re there! Here’s a ginger kitty sleeping on a balcony. 🐾… and here’s a lovely Siamese kitty walking down some purple stone steps. 🐾

The Berry Bar Happy Hour - Where It’s 5 O’clock All Day! 🌳🐿️
Hungry squirrel 🐿️ bellying up to the berries that have sprouted all over the Chinese Pistache tree 🌳 in the backyard.

Between this tree in the late Summer/Fall and the Pecan tree 🌳 in the Spring, these squirrels of mine are spoiled. (Not to mention the year-round birdseed they steal from the bird feeders). 🐿️ 💬 Look at all the Chinese Pistache tree berries!

I know it’s hard to watch all these beautiful things be carried away by time and see the wrong things growing in their place. But listen. Listen. We have to be the beautiful things now. It has to be us. It has to be us. Courage.

📚 Just Finished: The Summer Without Men 🚫 Y 🚫 Y 🚫 … after 30 yrs of marriage, Boris strays (yes, of course she’s younger). 🫤 A summer of deep thoughts, deep mature women, young women, & self awareness. A lovely, insighful, realistic, sometimes complicated 5⭐️ read.
I do love the writing of this author (my 2nd book of hers & 3rd already in my TBR). At times I encounter a paragraph that’s so smart and referencing something I have no clue about, that I have to stop & look things up or just decide to keep reading. I love this because it’s so intelligent! Anyway, this one is fully about women, about how we think and feel, when we’re young, old or in-between.

Read this and let me know what you think, ladies! I especially loved the Book Club scene, the writing exercise Mia gave her 7 young literary students after their Coven misdeed, and Abigail’s “secret amusements”. So much is packed into these 182 pages - it’s so rich in emotional depth.

Some noteworthy quotes to me:

“Being the other is the dance of the imagination.”

“"I am woman. I am invincible. |
am pooped!"Book Cover Insert: “
"Mia Fredricksen, the wry, vitruperative, tragicomic poet narrator of The Summer Without Men, has been forced to reexamine her own life.

One day, out of the blue, after thirty years of marriage, Mia's husband, a renowned neuroscientist, asks her for a "pause." This abrupt request sends her reeling and lands her in a psychiatric ward.

The June following Mia's release from the hospital, she returns to the prairie town of her childhood, where her mother lives in an old people's home. Alone in a rented house, she rages and fumes and bemoans her sorry fate. Slowly, however, she is drawn into the lives of those around her-her mother and her close friends, "the Five Swans," and her young neighbor with two small children and a loud, angry husband —and the adolescent girls in her poetry workshop whose scheming and petty cruelty carry a threat all their own.

From the internationally bestselling author of What I Loved comes a provocative, witty, and revelatory novel about women and girls, love and marriage, and the age-old question of sameness and difference between the sexes.”
