Logan: Definitely transformation/reinvention but also chivalry, the isolated and violence (though he'd be fighting that last one now). Ophelia: The sea is an obvious one, but really I think it'd be female rage, desire (objects, people, etc) and the curious/curiosity.

Heh. She’d been right about that ‘too special’ part in the motel. So dead on about the missing name in his tattoo that he’d almost thought she could see through him. That finally someone could see . . . He had to admit that there was something comforting about the idea of keeping her, despite the added danger and the interruption of all this. This quiet life he’d carefully carved out for himself. The isolation he’d intentionally sought. But old dogs knew better.

I've been working on and off on Twice Drowned lately, distracted by some other wips and a bit of fanfiction to unblock, but here's a more recent POV from Logan.

Logan tried his best to tune them out as he gestured to the tobacco he wanted. It was never good when they were as stirred up as this. He could still remember the last time. Could still taste the bitterness of it. It hadn't been a newspaper then but it might have well as been with the fervour it caused. He tried not to think too hard about the eyes of suspicion that had followed then. He only hoped that his assumption that it wasn't local business was right. He paid for the tobacco and pocketed it, intent on getting out to the ranch before they noticed his own news. Sure, he managed to go unnoticed for the most part but the people here grasped for anything new like their lives depended on it. Ophelia was just that, and the last thing he needed was more questions than he had good answers for.

In TD Ophelia's purpose for some time has been revenge. She's perhaps, unknowingly, lost her taste for it but it has fuelled her survival. Ophelia was satisfied by her initial revenge though. Logan never believed in revenge, but the circles he ran in did, and now he sees the futility of it. #wip

Ophelia in TD is monstrous through her actions, a condition of her species as well as survival, but it's her emotions (both her lack and excess of) that fuel her monstrosities. She's been hurt by humanity before which, alongside her species attitude towards them, also accounts for her actions.

Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein was glorious. The details, as always, were impressive and the acting was superb. Not a straight adaptation but a well-loved one, I really enjoyed the homages as well as GDT's own unique spin. The costumes were to die for. Made my love for the novel stronger ❤️‍🩹

In my next untitled wip, concerning Victorian scientists up to unethical experiments, there is a demon involved whom the religous medical student mistakes for Satan. My demon will be monstrous, cunning and will severely test both the faith of the student and his toxic bond with his mentor. 😈

Ophelia is my beloved Siren in Twice Drowned, her species being more monstrous in appearance than the classic idea of a mermaid (hence me using Siren, as that mythology almost rings truer in describing them). They're callous, cruel, territorial and true predators of the deepest, darkest sea.

Still working at Twice Drowned, here's a little snippet for #Saturdark Fun fact: So far the word 'blood' features 22 times in this wip. 🩸

Her lips, half-coated as they were in dried blood, were full and pressed tight like she was concentrating. They were also the same shade of pink as her nails. The colour suited her. Though not half as much as red did. That oughta bother him more. The blood splatter that spotted her lips and chin. But then, he had seen worse. Back at the casino, he'd only caught a glimpse of her in her true glory - teeth fastened tight - and he'd felt a sort of kin-ship looking at her then. Despite everything. No, the blood had never bothered him; he'd been born in it, bathed in it, felt it warm against his cheek . . . but that had been a lifetime ago. No. It didn't bother him, but it should.

Love horror but I've only sort of dipped my toes in, especially with Twice Drowned, but it's something I want to incorporate more. But, I do have a gothic horror wip that I'm working on, though I'm trying to both embrace the genre whilst also doing something which I hope is innovative(?) with it!

As she sped out on to the highway, she heard a groan beside her followed by a low voice. ‘Logan’. He winced then. ‘In case you were wonderin’. She hadn’t been, but his courtesy moved something in her leading her to answer him, ‘You can call me Ophelia’. The name was one of many – she could hardly remember her true one, not that it had an equivalent in any human language – but it was the one she’d used only this evening. The name of a woman drowned. She’d always liked that part of the play best.

He heard her snigger beside him before she spoke, ‘He prefers to watch the pool in the daytime, the motel rooms can rot so long as they do it quietly’. Again, that unsettling feeling shifted in his gut before it was masked by sharp, shooting pains as they stopped abruptly at a mint green-coloured door. He leant against the doorframe as she bent down again to search for her key. This time he didn’t have the energy to avert his eyes, not that he could see much in the lowlight anyway. He wondered idly how long it’d be until the sun came up, his sense of time even more off track with the fight. Lucky that he wasn’t wanted at the ranch for a couple more weeks. Shame he hadn’t seemed to gain any self-control in the last fifteen years. The click of the door as it opened disturbed him from his thoughts as Ophelia’s arm came around his waist to guide him inside. Suddenly embarrassed by the attention as much as the helplessness, he fought against the steady flow of pain to gently push off her assistance.

Multiple POV ala GRRM, its just a fine art to get right and you need to separate per chapter or else it's difficult to read. I was too ambitious at the time and thought I could pull it off, so only having one POV or two at most is much easier to do. Plus narratively I think it works best for me!

Excerpt from my wip, Twice Drowned:
Stupid fool. He clearly hadn’t been watching well enough. She shifted her lips beneath his hand and tasted acrid flesh. It would only be unpleasant for a moment, but still she found herself repulsed by the sharp bitterness of it. Her teeth tingled, almost threatening to rescind at the mere thought of touching such skin. Still, she aimed to bite but for the sudden interruption of the gaming table collapsing as somebody crashed heavily upon it.
The offending hands left her as he stepped back sharpish, throwing her away from him as he did so. She tripped as the toe of her shoe caught against the leg of the collapsing gaming table, causing her to land harshly on the floor. A mess of wood and chips and a broken body laid sprayed unceremoniously behind her as the voices of the crowd shouted and muttered in the background. Apparently they’d become the floor show, any security guards still standing just part of the act. She mourned the no-doubt irreparable state of her dress, and looked up from her inelegant position on the floor to meet the eyes of her nameless champion once again. He was offering a hand as if they weren’t in the middle of a casino fight but simply a knight of medieval romance, offering his lady help from her carriage. Or something equally chivalric. She wasn’t exactly an expert or anything.

Getting the words out has been hard this last month, but currently I'm struggling with a fight scene!! Particularly the dynamics of it, trying to utilise the environment and make it interesting but plausible. Doesn't help that I'm a perfectionist and keep editing instead of just progressing 😑
