Isn’t locking in the 6-3 majority vastly more important than whether one looks weak? Given how rabidly partisan he is, I don’t understand how he doesn’t see this in the same terms?

I think any Federalist Society hack confirmed during a lame duck session could do that just as well, but hopefully you’re right and Dems hold the line as you suggest, assuming they win.

I still refuse to believe he won’t retire during the lame duck session assuming Dems retake the Senate.

The light American lager is really starting to grow on me as a style. Should probably revisit Budweiser and reassess.

Sounds also like there’s a non-trivial chance no league takes them in that scenario. Wild.

I’ll have to rewind and re-watch his subsequently inserted update following the EPL’s statement, but if I recall what he said correctly in that update, he thinks outright expulsion is now the most likely scenario?

This might have been a discussion I was having with someone, but I completely agree with you. In the exchange I was having, the crux of our disagreement seemed to boil down to the question of whether the ephemeral joy of victory outweighs a lifetime of moral and competitive taint. Not for me!

Yes, it should! In proportion to the magnitude of the infraction.

Angad Nagra @angadnagra.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
And, of course, it can be a question of degree as well. Your hypothetical sounds like a rather minor infraction. City’s conduct was the opposite: sustained, systematic, brazen.

Angad Nagra @angadnagra.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
An "achievement in the fine margins,” to borrow your words, makes it that much more likely that an illegally obtained competitive advantage, if proven, was dispositive of the result. That’s really the fundamental principle here: competition on equal footing under the rules that exist at the time.
110
Angad Nagra @angadnagra.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Well sure mate, it’s definitely factually very different. I just don’t see how that admitted factual difference translates into an analytical difference.

Angad Nagra @angadnagra.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Yeah, but what if Leroy Sane was purchaed using money that wasn’t allowed to be spent? How is that different than him scoring a goal thanks to drugs that weren’t supposed to be in his system? In each case, a violation of rules confers competitive advantage.

Angad Nagra @angadnagra.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
I see two possible paths out of this abyss: (1) a supermajority of clubs—essentially comprised of all of the non-“big 6” clubs—unites to force a rules change and overrule the league’s entrenched minority; or (2) the government intervenes to that effect.
000
Angad Nagra @angadnagra.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
No disagreements about that! I want the rules changed as much as anybody. I think I’d even prefer the pre-PSR state of affairs over the status quo.
100
Angad Nagra @angadnagra.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Yeah. Another example of an illegally obtained competitive advantage. I struggle to see why a win under those circumstances would be tainted whereas a win accomplished via an illegally obtained financial advantage would not be tainted.

Angad Nagra @angadnagra.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
If we become selective about the rules we’re going to follow based on individual perceptions of fairness (however meritorious they may be), then that starts to erode the integrity of the competition, which is fundamentally rules-based.
100
Angad Nagra @angadnagra.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Perhaps this is a subjective disposition on my part, but at the end of the day, I just can’t feel good about a win that was attained through non-compliance with the rules that existed at the time, irrespective of what used to happen before those rules existed.

Not worth it for me, either. Noel Gallagher’s been acting all nonchalant about it but I struggle to comprehend how even the truest of fans doesn’t start to see competitive “accomplishments” in a different, more tainted light after revelations of this nature and magnitude.

I have always assumed that guarantees of PSR compliance were extracted before the takeover was approved, particularly given how far advanced City’s misconduct was by that point.

City don’t deserve the safety net of second division football. They should be starting at the bottom of the pyramid and working their way back up after this.

Angad Nagra @angadnagra.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
On what planet was Man City’s misconduct not sanctioned at the very top, i.e., by the Sheikh himself? There are obligatory disclaimers in the Athletic’s reporting that he hasn’t been directly implicated, but c’mon.

Angad Nagra @angadnagra.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Yeah, for sure. EPL simply has no choice and City have forced their hand. If they go light on City, then we truly have a double standard, and everything risks falling apart.

This was the spookiest line in Nate Cohn’s write-up accompanying the NYT/Siena poll resultst: "More often than not, outlying Times/Siena results — defined here as different from the prior average by at least four points — have been more accurate than the average of other polls at the time.”

There’s nothing more uncomfortable for a pollster than a result that stands out from the pack, but it doesn’t mean it should be dismissed.
