I guess I haven't mentioned it here, but I have a new professional scicomm job working as a Lava Master at Iceland's Lava Show! I get to spend every day teaching people from around the world about Iceland's volcanic landscape and maybe coolest of all, I get to play with real lava!
Person dressed in black with protective arm sleeves, standing next to a small river of lava. The person is holding one end of a long metal pole over the lava and the other end has a glob of lava dripping down and forming a very thin string of volcanic glass

Hopefully I'll start to post more often on here again 😅 but tonight's aurora show over my workplace was truly the best I've seen since moving to Iceland. I only caught the tail end of it with my camera, unfortunately.

I've had a great couple days leading an educational tour for middle school students from the US around Reykjavík, the Golden Circle, Þórufoss, Hveradalir Geothermal Area, & the 2021 Reykjanes eruption site❤️ The pic is me talking about the history of Iceland's parliament at Þingvellir National Park.

Are any other bioarchs heading to the AAAs in New Orleans this coming fall? I'm hoping to find a session to present my PhD work on the skeletal collection housed at the Uni of Iceland’s medical school

Women anthropologists, please apply!!! I did a Bibliometric analysis of the AJBA from 1918 to 2023. Recently, there was a more equal number of papers between women and men with the current editor Dr. Trudy Turner. Another woman anthropologist will hopefully continue the momentum

SAPIENS is a free digital magazine devoted to popularizing anthropological research and ideas for an international, general audience. Each March 1, the editorial team considers “pitches” from anthropologists about contributing to the magazine. buff.ly/3WDep8s

Here is a photo of a trans non-binary biologist (me) holding a bird (Eastern Towhee) that is likely a bilateral gynandromorph-- a fusion of cells with female-type chromosomes and cells with male-type chromosomes in one bird! Biological sex and human gender diversity is real and wonderful ❤️🏳️‍⚧️

Museum/anatomy peeps - Does anyone have experience with conserving and/or restoring the hardware on an antique Beauchēne mount (an "exploded skull")?

Forgot to add: U Wisconsin’s Gender & Women’s Studies Dept. is accepting applications for their Wittig Postdoc in Feminist Biology, due Feb. 14. It’s been a minute (omg nearly a decade 😱) since I was in this role, but if my experience can answer any questions, let me know.

An unpleasant side effect of the flare up of the “science isn’t political” discourse is folks recommending defenses of that position from harassy/assaulty science guys.
