I tried Niri and have never hated anything more, but so many people love it, so I'm probably wrong. I really love Rectangle on MacOS but am not willing to spend the time to build/modify a compositor on Linux for the same functionality.

can't believe this essay is four years old, but yeah, the key to understanding a lot of policy debates about urbanism is that by controlling where people live, you can profoundly affect their life outcomes this is kind of obvious stated plainly but is worth reflecting on

Yeah, critics drawing the analogy to the dot com era have largely failed to analyze how quickly GPUs produce revenue and income vs. fiber and networking hardware, what the cash flow impacts are and what real vs subsidized demand curves look like.

I think there's a lot of room for consumer/prosumer margin destruction but the reality is commercial users are generally paying specifically to never have to think about the underlying issues in the software.

Pop OS is generally great and COSMIC is a good idea still partially baked (been using it exclusively for 6ish months). There are definitely some compositor architecture choices I disliked when I went to look at modifying it but honestly I've just changed my workflow.

Honestly shocked the ratio is that *low*. Lots of high earners feel like they're owed their tax deductions, savings rates and private schools.

The reason Dems have to investigate and prosecute - legally or administratively, as appropriate - where there is evidence of wrong doing is to prevent those found guilty from ever touching the levers of power again. I don't care if it's getting Al Capone on tax evasion. Get it all on the books.

I think basically everyone should be skeptical of discussions of IP that aren't based on monetary principles. That's why IP was invented! Sorry to everyone who has a strong ethical stance on IP but fundamentally that is not how at least US IP law is built.

Tired of pretending there’s any value in having a systems conversation about a system with people who reject the concept of systems.

Your implication is that hospitals have more undiscovered efficiency than they do pricing power and if the state believes that they should instead incentivize the efficiency instead of applying broad penalties.

Andz @andz.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Every layer of govt continues to do dumb special interest group risk pools instead of combining them or creating broader risk pooling mechanisms. Broad cost control mechanisms haven't worked for 30+ years and they only keep getting tried because pols are scared to touch any other part of the system.

Yes and the winners here will be the HCOs with the most market power who effectively maintain their margins -- that's bad! It means more group premium inflation coming, which then drives public markets' prices up as well (especially for ACA).

Andz @andz.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
There's fundamentally no reason to lay off the costs of public employer benefits via the premium cost transfer mechanism instead of taxes, it's almost certainly less efficient. Also it weakens the other commercial high risk pools, which will then need further support down the road.

Yeah it's in the docs and IIRC goes through 2029, although there are some benefits to quick restocking (lower return rate).

Andz @andz.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
The outsized net margin reduction compared to the proportion of the market is because all SHBP/SEHBP members would move to the negative side of the average! Either HCOs accept lower margins (historically not the case) or commercial payers rates will rise over time to fill the gap.
100
Andz @andz.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
The median hospital has negative margins on aggregate Medicare claims, whether MedPAC thinks that's "efficient" or not reimbursing at those rates is unsustainable. So HCOs margin shift to commercial plans. RBP likely increases provider consolidation given that need for increased pricing power.

This is such a great example imo, because I used it to create a new school calendar this year (by combining the multiple school, PTA, and extracurricular calendar pdfs) but very specifically don't use it to manage specific calendar tasks because the review time is too high. That will change!

Only if you think that commercial operating margins exist in a vacuum. The system is designed to use those margins to subsidize Medicare and Medicaid, this just adds another group as subsidy recipients. Real margins are <10%.

if the thing you want to say is "i am very mad about ai" it is ok to just say that. people, even """pro ai""" people, are much more receptive to "i am having big feelings" than "i have fully left my own knowledge base to parrot trivially falsifiable lies"

Fixed pricing at the levels you're quoting is below provider cost.

The question of RBP or not is would we rather subsidize teacher healthcare via private healthcare plan prices increases or via direct taxation and it's not obvious to me the former is any better.
110
Andz @andz.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
To the extent RBP just reverses the risk pool arbitrage, primarily to the detriment of providers, pretty limited net positive. It would be much better to just build better (larger) risk pools. Basically the story of all US health insurance markets at the moment.

The amount of APTCs in aggregate isn't actually up for debate, that's just the premium charged by insurers. They actually do not care about that at the member level. Playing this game is why the ACA market had been perpetually consolidating.

Andz @andz.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
The only people who benefit from enrollment fraud are brokers, the implication that APTCs are the reason for the fraud suggests you're unaware of ACA insurer pricing. Pull out a bunch of low/no utilization members and next year premiums will blow up again, and total APTCs will be roughly the same.
100
Andz @andz.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Yeah the actual amounts paid here don't matter, between insurer MLRs and margins. In the unlikely scenario there are significant fraudulent enrollments now the change is exactly what we saw last year, where it ballooned this year's premiums.
