Slept in too late for The Calling, but I’ll be around the #fabtcg venue this weekend on and off. If you see me, say hi!

My office is on the second story of a high-rise with the closest window looking into a courtyard. Not much sunlight gets in. I just found myself in a meeting on the top floor in a room with a window. Wow, it's amazing how even cloudy skylight can improve my mood so much!

#fabtcg SAGE is pretty fun! Went 7-2 on briar today and came home with the gold!

The modern AI revolution is basically the advent of automobiles. 1. Individuals need to figure out how to be better drivers rather than better horses. 2. Gonna do so much harm to the planet There’s no getting away from this. Better learn to drive now!

I've been a Software Engineering Manager for over 4 years. During that time, my code output was minimal. Leveraging modern AI tools to generate code and reviewing that code both gives me a sense of the _fun_ I used to have without the _tedium_ that came with C++ string parsing.

Nothing like sitting through a 4 minute at-temperature steep just for the herbal tea that looked like it might be tasty to actually be gross.

A plane white cup filled with disappointment

My youtube channel, youtube.com/@andymodellbackpacks is an adult. To celebrate, today I've filmed a video, but I won't be publishing it just yet. Stay tuned for after I get the affiliate link from the bag provider all set up :P

Basically, I draft a lot... but I'm also old. Take that as you will.

Andy Modell @andymodell.com · 19/11/2025

As a manager, it's sometimes difficult to make everybody I work with happy, and it's the cases where I can't that spend more time on my mind. Still, hearing from a report that they see me doing well and feel well supported always makes the days a little bit better.

One of the nice things about living on the US East Coast is that of the next three trips I'm taking, two of them are actually by train.

Fun story: A few years ago (like, in 2023 or something), me, my wife, and her sister were all trick-or-treating around my in-law's neighborhood. At one house, the husband was skeptical because we weren't kids, but the wife exclaimed "Our First Teenagers!" excitedly. We were all 30+ at the time.

My parents just closed on selling the house I grew up in. They finished building that house 10 days before I was born, and now I’ll never set foot inside again. Feels surreal. They got the offer and closed all without me in the state, so I never got to say a proper goodbye.

At a Hawker Center today, I’m pretty sure that one stall’s cash register is just a pile of newspaper the guy is putting the cash under (left of the pot in the photo). If it works, it works.

Update: finished the Australia leg of the trip, and it was a blast. Sydney is definitely a city I’d consider living in if it were closer to the rest of the world, and seeing the Great Barrier Reef was awesome.

I hear so much about people who care about the 2nd amendment, but not enough who care about the 5th. When due process can not be guaranteed, how are individuals sure that any other rights may be upheld?

Many of you know I post reviews of backpacks on my youtube channel, www.youtube.com/@AndyModellBackpacks. I'm thinking that I may soon begin posting some reviews of watches. Should I use the same channel or make a separate one?

Hey @scalzi.com: two questions for you if you've got time to answer: 1. What's the best way for me to procure a digital copy of The Shattering Peace such that you get highest royalties? 2. Did you ever meet Roger Zelazney? He was my father's favorite author and I love his Amber books.

Bell towers are fun because they let you know the time without having a watch or other clock handy. The tower I can hear from my office roof just rang its 11:15am chime, so I checked my watch to compare.... then I checked my computer and my phone.... the bell tower is about 90 seconds behind.

Crown jewel of my collection is a baseball signed by the artists at the first #fabcw #fabtcg world championship in 2022. It’s also signed by Michael Hamilton (first world championship) And James White!

I may have missed a round start day 2 of the Calling NJ and got knocked out of the money by the IP, but grabbing this ©️2018 uncut Ira starter deck sheet was totally worth it #fabcw #fabtcg. Also, here’s a baseball with art from all the Worlds2022 artists, JW, and Michael Hamilton signatures

Had a dram last night about writing an algorithm and discussing the details about whether it should take in a C++ rvalue (&&) reference or if that would cause things to break. I haven't written C++ code in at least 4 years. What does this mean?

Andy Modell @andymodell.com · 23/07/2025

@dcnewsnow.bsky.social what happened to my normal morning local news? Sunrise on the Hill today seemed to have too much of a national news lead when I’m really looking for my local stories without having to focus on the headline stories in the morning, + traffic and weather.

Sometimes, I just sit back and realize how cool the technology we have available to us now is. Even looking back 10 or 20 years, things just do so much more, so much easier. Too bad society is crumbling around us, but at least we have nice toys.

Andy Modell @andymodell.com · 17/06/2025

Nothing like reviewing a presentation with the team before sharing it to the director and having the director wander in without your noticing. Fortunately, it was well received.
