The country needs electoral reform – and Labour has the chance to be on the right side of this argument
First-past-the-post is failing. Representatives are being elected on 20 per cent of the vote and less. That is not a democratic mandate.

When I knock on doors in Rossendale and Darwen, people are still asking, “Where is the change that we were promised?” We have not moved nearly far enough or fast enough to meet the needs of communities like mine. Last week’s local election results show us that starkly. youtube.com/shorts/gQ3Bz...

I welcome the Prime Minister’s announcement today that this government is bringing in a digital ID system. I want to be clear - this is not a compulsory ID system. You will never be forced to carry your ID or produce it on demand.

Great to attend the launch of the APPG for Access to Nature's new report yesterday, which calls for "new statutory rights for responsible access" to the English countryside. As @andymacnaemp.bsky.social said, "my own view is that we need a default right of access." @righttoroam.bsky.social 1/

If you promise to build homes, you must deliver them - it’s as simple as that. Our Labour Government is fulfilling its promise to build 1.5 million homes by simplifying the process of approving new projects across the UK.

Yesterday in Parliament: Cool question from @andymacnaemp.bsky.social about the economic impact of active travel gets a positive response from @simonlightwood.org.uk about forthcoming research by Active Travel England into employment effects. www.theyworkforyou.com/wrans/?id=20...
Question by Andy MacNae
Labour, Rossendale and Darwen
To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what assessment she has made with the Secretary of State for Transport on the potential impact of safe walking and cycling routes on rates of economic inactivity.

Answer from Simon Lightwood
Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Department for Transport)
The Department has carried out an evidence review of the economic impacts of transport interventions that includes evidence on economic inactivity. The research shows a positive relationship between investing in transport and employment in the surrounding areas, but further research is required to measure the effect on economic inactivity. Active Travel England is delivering a national active travel evaluation that will seek to include a proportionate assessment of the impact of active travel investment on employment.

On 12 February, Active Travel England announced £291 million of funding to boost walking, wheeling and cycling across England. It is estimated that the infrastructure funded will lead to 43,000 fewer sick days a year and contribute £9 million every year to the economy by supporting local businesses and making it easier to walk and cycle to work.

I very much welcome the announcement that Labour will be investing a record £2.65 billion into flood defences protecting lives, homes and businesses in every region of the country. I'm looking forward to the full list of flood defence projects being published in March.

I’m backing a bill to get tough on criminals who steal tools from the vans of working people. The loss of earnings resulting from tool theft is much bigger than the value of the items stolen. It affects the livelihood of tradespeople. This must change. Add your name: survey.labour.org.uk/tool-theft

The Tories squandered billions of pounds on dodgy deals with Covid cronies. Our Bill will help to get that money back. People who exploit a national emergency for personal profit should be taken to court for their crimes.

The Conservatives left our rivers, lakes and seas choked by record levels of sewage. Last night, I voted for Labour’s Water (Special Measures) Bill to clean them up by placing water companies under special measures with new powers to ban bonuses & bring criminal charges against polluting bosses.

Roads in Rossendale and Darwen have been plagued by potholes for far too long. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has announced that this Labour Government is investing up to £12,000,000 in Lancashire and £1,000,000 in Blackburn with Darwen to fix potholes as part of our Plan for Change.
