Although on the surface most Frosters are followers of the Empire's dominate dragon-worship religion, they have a lot of rituals and beliefs from older traditions. Many follow star-ruled paths or a rare religion focused on elementals rather than dragons. (2/3)

#OctoberWorldbuilders Like most of the Empire, Frosters are matriarchal and have both noble representation and elected officials. The official government doesn't do much though. Most of what gets achieved is pulled off by family organizations that technically qualify as crime syndicates.* (1/3)

I hate to say don't come here, but... I was really excited about a friend potentially visiting me from France but had to side with her mom in saying the trip needs to wait a few more years. I don't even want to leave because I don't want to deal with having to come back as a US citizen.

Despite outsiders making a big deal of how much of The Frosteds are under the governance of 'crime syndicates', a local will tell you the main thing that makes them a Froster is that they know how to make their own sweaters and blankets. A Froster who can't do that will have a medical explanation.

#OctoberWorldbuilders The Empire is vast enough to have more than one desert. Catboy Yves is from an arctic desert called The Frosteds. People are generally pretty easy-going there to make up for the harsh environment and place a high value on crafts and the arts. (1/2)

No whitespace

After running some panels, the vet doesn't think there's anything too dire wrong with the pooch. But he'll need extra attention and special food for a few days, which is directly at odds with the trip I'm supposed to have already left on...

#QueerPrompts What season does The First Verse of Winter take place in? If they were on Earth someone would actually argue autumn because the winter solstice is five days after it ends. But on Faereen that person would be called ridiculous. It's ski season, so I don't feel bad calling it winter.

Andy Brokaw 🖤🩶🤍💚🤍🩶🖤 @andy.northsky.social · 23/09/2026

#QueerPrompts Almost all my characters are pan. The majority who aren't are ace or demi. It's a small minority and none of my leads to date who experience sexual attraction but only to a specific gender. (They call it being gender-selective.) This reflects the general population of my setting.

I probably won't get quite as obsessive with everything after Chapter 1. I'm not sure my health can handle being that critical of the entire book. But I haven't gotten to the bit where I can honestly say I feel like I'm changing stuff but not necessarily improving it. So on I slog.

Andy Brokaw 🖤🩶🤍💚🤍🩶🖤 @andy.northsky.social · 22/09/2026

This ripping apart sentences level of editing is my least favorite. I find it exhausting and somewhat demoralizing, because it's focused on what's wrong with each and every sentence so even when I write a better sentence most of the time all I see is that one isn't perfect either...

Andy Brokaw 🖤🩶🤍💚🤍🩶🖤 @andy.northsky.social · 22/09/2026

I spent last week ripping apart, reassembling, ripping apart again, and reassembling again (repeat) with the first chapter of Winter's First Verse. Most of that time was dedicated to the first page. It is safe to say I am now 100% sick of my opening content. Today I moved on to the second chapter.
