I just remembered another - being so, so worried about spontaneous human combustion after reading about it in a magazine! I’ve always been a worrier!

I do like a bit of decay, be it urban or structures within a more scenic landscape, which highlights the disrespect humans can have for beauty.

Managed to pick up a 115 un55 from SJS for a recent rebuild. Maybe I should get a spare…along with some Deore T610 hubs from Spa (why have the extra weight of a disk hub when you’re never going to use disks?).

Not so much out of fear of them going out of production, but fear that the quality drops or prices rise due to the parts being considered niche. Speaking as an 8-speed triple/canti user on 100/135 oln wheels.

I also don’t qualify for a free one now that covid is no longer a concern. Modern society seems to make the easiest of tasks far too complex. They probably hope people won’t bother!

Yes, I can see how having too many projects is not a good thing. Would you get them finished in time for the colder weather if you just made them on your travels?

Back when I wrote Lost Lanes North, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park was free to enter if you arrived by bike (or on foot or public transport). If you arrived by car, you had to pay a parking fee. Today, car parking is free, and all visitors pay the same entry fee.

Especially as the Oxford-Bristol direct train service has been reintroduced! Cheaper than having to go via Reading as well. I need to start upping the cycling miles again, after they dropped off significantly during the summer heat.

Swindon Half this coming weekend. It’s a lovely route - flat for a few miles before climbing up the (road-based) Ridgeway and then a gentle downhill/flat back to the start.

A good quality steel frame/forks, if looked after and barring theft/accident, can quite easily last the lifetime of the owner.

I make my granola with cashews, walnuts, crunchy peanut butter, a seed mix, goji berries, raisins, cranberries, dates and honey. Serve it with various fresh fruits (always a banana!) and Skyr yogurt. I think you’ve inspired me to try overnight oats now though.

Hmmm, I normally make my own granola for breakfast consumption during the warmer months (and it is 👍🤌👌), but I might try overnight oats when the current batch is finished.

Ortlieb offer a good repair service (sent me some free replacement buckles) and I like the idea of Upso bags reusing old truck tarps for bags.

I'm not really a bike-specific clothing person, so I buy workwear shorts - lots of pockets and I'm yet to wear through the backside of a pair. I like the Alpkit repair service offered on any make. Berthoud saddles, while expensive, can be fully repaired by the user.

As it happens I’m writing a magazine feature on bike gear (incl clothing) that just lasts. Or that is backed by a good repair service or a range of spare parts. What are your top tips?

New sock day! I don’t know any company that stands by their products like Darn Tough. Most lifetime warranties exclude ‘normal wear and tear’ but if you wear out these sock they’ll send a new pair, as I can confirm. Also insanely comfortable.
