A black and white photo of a statue of Jacob Van Artevelde standing in Vrijdagmarkt in Gent.

The day woke with a flat grey sky and although chairs and tables have been placed outside of cafés there are only a couple of people visible in the frame, suggesting early morning. The trees are not fully in leaf, suggesting mid-Spring. Seven pigeons wander about near the base of the statue, searching hopefully for scraps of food dropped the previous evening.

Post your warning sign
Photograph of a red sign with the words "DANGER FAILED ROAD" in white letters, next to a track that curves upwards to disappear behind a hedge. Behind the sign is a field of young wheat or barley, and a telegraph pole and wires with birds on them. the sky is a pale blue with white clouds.

I used to live a couple of hundred metres from the Thames just south of Oxford. It was a popular place for stolen mopeds to be dumped and set alight after being joyridden. #blackandwhite #filmisnotdead #tri-x
A black and white photograph. To the right of frame are stacked some ruined mopeds. They have no tyres and appear to have been set on fire. They are leaning against a metal-railing gate with metal fish, which is itself leaning against a brick wall with graffiti on it. There is also a shopping trolley.

To the left of frame a gravel path weaves its way into the distance, reaching a metal-railing fence. Beyond the fence lies a meadow, although it can barely be perceived due to the misty weather. The shadows of a line of trees can be seen in the distance.

A view of Malmesbury, with the spire of St. Paul's Church to the left. #photography #Olympus #blackandwhite
A black and white photo taken in Malmesbury. The sky is moody, with dark clouds. The trees are bare, although some shrubs in the foreground look to have buds. It is 13.55, as can be seen from the clock on St. Paul's Church Spire, the only part of the church that remains.

I used to wander around with camera poking my nose into places few people went. I found these boots under a wide concrete road bridge. Why were they there? Did their owner leave barefoot? South Oxford. #photography #blackandwhite #tri-x #filmisnotdead
A black and white film photograph taken underneath a road bridge. In the foreground, lying in a shallow pool of water, are a pair of women's below the knee boots, discarded. The bridge is constructed in concrete, roughly 20m wide, and the space underneath is rough dirt and stones, with a couple of pools of water against the right-side wall. The view through the bridge hints trees, although this part of the photo is very grainy.

Black and white photo of the Catacombs of Paris, the underground ossuaries holding the remains of roughly six million people. The view is of a doorway, either side of which, painted on the wall, are two white triangles. Above the doorway is written "Arrête! C'est ici l'empire de la mort" - Stop! Here is the empire of death. Through the doorway the passage descends into darkness. A distant plaque is unable to be read.

For #Standingstonesunday a summer's day photo of a chap enjoying a quiet moment at #Avebury #blackandwhite #photography
A black and white photo of a standing stone at Avebury. Beside the stone a man sits in a camping chair, wearing dark trousers and a white t-shirt with a collar. He is looking at his phone, possibly using it to listen to something, as it appears he is wearing earphones. There is a carrier bag beside the chair. The sky is cloudy, although the man's attire suggests the weather is warm. The stone itself dwarfs the man. It is as wide as it is high.

I think this photograph was taken in Oxford, somewhere near near the river at Folly Bridge. I can't remember the camera used for sure, but probably a Ricoh GR1v. The film was definitely Tri-X. #Oxford #filmphotography #blackandwhite #tri-x
A black and white photograph in a square format. The photograph shows two sets of steps. The steps to the left have a railing (left) and a hand rail (right). The steps to the right can be seen through a doorway in a stone wall, which forms the division between the two sets of steps, and are mostly hidden by this wall. At the top of the steps, which is street level, buildings can be seen in the distance.

New College Lane, Oxford. Spring 2012. #oxford #blackandwhite
A black and white image taken on New College Lane, Oxford. Much of the image is in shadow, but a shaft of sunlight illuminates two people in an embrace. It is Spring - some trees are in full leaf, while others are just in bud. Although the sky is cloudless it is still chilly enough for the couple to be wearing coats. The 14th century bell tower can be seen behind the trees.

The Tuileries Gardens, Paris. Early 2000s. Tri-X. #photography #filmphotography #Paris #Tri-X
A black and white photograph taken in the Tuileries Gardens in Paris. There is a low winter sun casting elongated shadows from the bare trees, which stand in rows. A jogger can be seen in the mid-distance and three other figures in the far distance, otherwise the scene is as bare of human life as the trees are of leaves.

Canal Saint-Martin, Paris, looking towards the lock that joins the Seine. Mid 2000s. Tri-X.
Black and white photo of the Canal Saint-Martin, Paris, taken in the mid 2000s. It is winter, as the trees lining the canal are without leaves, and there is a slight mist/haze to the distance. There are slight ripples on the water, indicating a light breeze, that distort the reflections of the trees. The canal leads to the last lock before it joins the Seine. People can be seen walking across a footbridge at the far end of the lock.

Black and white photograph of a street scene in Amsterdam. There has been a recent storm as the street and pavements are wet. The photographer is taking the photo contre jour, so most of the people on the pavements are in shadow. There is a bicycle parked on the pavement directly in front of the photographer. Various shop signs can be seen mounted on the buildings of the street. In the distance the Royal Palace can be seen standing against the bright sky.

I love finding little scenes that could tell different stories depending on your mood. Here, a solitary soiled glove and a discarded cigarette butt showing no signs of being lit. Early 2000s near Castillon, Calvados. Tri-X #photography #filmphotography #glove #Tri-X
A black and white photograph of a glove and cigarette butt on stony ground. The photograph has been taken from above and at fairly close range - the glove and butt almost fill the frame. The glove is light in colour, from the right hand, and is heavily soiled with a dark material on the fingers and thumb. The cigarette butt, lying to the left of the glove, shows no obvious sign of having been lit.

Amsterdam, Spring 2005. It was mid afternoon when the sky dramatically darkened, so I headed into a bar. The rain was torrential, with thunder and lightning. Unfortunately I can’t remember the location. #film #filmphotography #Amsterdam #Provia400 #storm
A digital scan of a slide film photo. The photographer is sitting in a bar taking a photo of the street scene outside. Although mid afternoon in May it is quite dark and gloomy. The streets are sodden with the rain of a sudden storm. Immediately outside of the bar a line of metal and wicker chairs are facing the photographer, empty. A pot plant and an ashtray, with one discarded butt, sit on a round marble effect tabletop. In the mid distance a man, dressed in black in a hooded top, is standing in front of a parked car paying for a parking ticket at a machine. A candle, that is inside the bar, can be seen reflected in the window of the bar projected onto the dark bodywork of the parked car. A brake light from a passing car, that is out of the scene, trails across a third of the photo due to the slow shutter speed used. On the opposite side of the road, to the left, posters advertising events are plastered onto an old style, round advertising plinth. The opposite shops have their lights on and these are reflecting on the wet tarmac. An alleyway disappears into the distance.

This is Donnington Bridge, spanning the Thames just south of Oxford. Boat crews were practicing for Eights Week and the splash that can be seen in the foreground is from an oar of a passing boat. Early 2000s. Tri-X #photography #filmphotography #monochrome #Oxford
A black and white photograph taken under Donnington Bridge, Oxford. The structure of the underside of the bridge has rib-like concrete beams spanning the water. The far side of the bridge is covered in graffiti. On the opposite banks crews are prepping their eight person sculling shells for practice for the Oxford Eights Week. In the foreground one of these sculling shells is going, at speed, under the bridge and due to this speed and the slow shutter speed it is just a blur, with one of its oars causing a splash in the water.

A black and white photographer of the Place de l’Institut taken from the Pont des Arts. It is nighttime. The Place de l’Institut is floodlit. There is soft street lighting on the Pont des Arts, which highlights the wooden boards that make up it surface. Two empty benches can be seen in the middle of the bridge in the mid distance, whilst the two further benches are occupied. Two other couples can be seen further down the bridge, one to the left, the other to the right.

A black and white photograph of the Île de la Cité in Paris, with the photographer standing on the Pont des Arts. It is nighttime and the lights of the Pont Neuf, which crosses the frame, are lighting up the inky water, which looks quite choppy. A trip boat is coming underneath the right side of the Pont Neuf. I’ve just been looking through some old b+w film photos I took a while back, before being seduced with the immediacy of digital. I really should start using film again.
Black and white photograph taken at the Oxford end of the Oxford Canal showing the towpath to the left, railings alongside the winding (turning) hole and two British Waterways working boats moored up. It’s a still winter’s day with reflections of the canal side trees, railings and boats visible in the water.
