What could be my final voyage on Scillonian III proved an exhilarating experience with superb views of Minke Whale, Risso's & Common Dolphins, Harbour Porpoise, Cory's Shearwaters, Grey Phal, Bonxie & Euro Stormie. I'll miss this old boat when it retires next month. So many fond memories #ukbirding

Well done on the Vireo Kyle. I remember a time when it was far easier to see REV in Britain than Pallid Harrier. How things have changed!

Is there a 'war on the countryside'? Yes - but it's the one being waged by the landowners who unleash 50 million pheasants each year... Step forward 'Lord' Christian Brighty to explain, in this devastating (and hilarious) video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFi8...

Slightly better photos of the Wilson’s Snipe this afternoon as it moved out of the dark area of reeds! #ukrarebirds #ukbirding

The last 4 days I spent 8 hours at Lower Moors #Scilly trying to photo the key features of Wilson's Snipe without it once spreading its tail or wings! So relieved that someone else managed it. A very striking monochromatic bird that convinced straight away. ID notes in alt #ukbirding #birds
Wilson's Snipe, Lower Moors, Scilly - 06/10. Note strong and dense barring on flanks with no buff ground colour. The grey centred covert and tertial feathers with whitish tipped coverts were very distinctive.Wilson's Snipe, Lower Moors, Scilly - 04/10. Scapulars and crown feathers very black and uniform with very few paler edges. Narrow crown stripe and whitish braces contrasting very strongly with background, rather like Jack Snipe.Wilson's Snipe, Lower Moors, Scilly - 03/10. we arrived in the ISBG hide 15 minutes after the bird was found. This was taken from Hilda Quick hide. On the underparts the buff colouration is limited to the neck and up onto the headLower Moors, Scilly - 04/10. The bird that some thought was the Wilson's but was actually Common Snipe. This photos shows some key differences - particularly covert, tertial and scapular ground colour and pattern, flanks, and head pattern

Know the feeling Matt. Watched the 1998 bird at Lower Moors (first accepted record for UK) for many hours over the course of several days seeking insight. In the end, patient photographers made the difference.

Only if it produces a lifer Dawn! Not planned anything as such. Just looking for my own birds in West Country while awaiting some decent weather for migrants. How about you?

It's identity confirmed from photographs only this morning, the Scilly Wilson's Snipe performed admirably from a cramped hide at Lower Moors. I even managed a brief view of the underwing! My second seen in the UK (three decades after my first), both encountered on St Mary's #ukbirding

Given time constraints, I opted to give the Sora a miss Ian. I understand it was difficult in the afternoon.

Yep. In and out job to see the snipe. Back to flogging the Cornish valleys after tomorrow's blow passes through.

I love the unbridled enthusiasm demonstrated by young birders just starting out and eager to learn. I was energised by a day out in Dorset and Wiltshire with @kidphotographer24.bsky.social, who enjoyed his first encounters with Spotted Crake, Woodlark and Stone Curlew #ukbirding

The probable Todd's Canada Goose I found at Slimbridge WWT last week may have been open to debate, but there was no doubting the Night Heron that flew by uttering it's gutteral call at Ham Wall 2 days later. A quartet of Glossy Ibis showed particularly well from Avalon hide #ukbirding

September has served up some tasty Autumnal scarcities, including Pallid Harrier, Semipalmated, Bairds, Buff-breasted & Pectoral Sandpipers, Lesser Yellowlegs, multiple Grey Phalaropes and a Wryneck. I wonder what goodies October will bring . . . #ukbirding

A flying visit to see family in Lancashire proved well-timed as it coincided with the presence of the juvenile Pallid Harrier at Marshside. I couldn't quite believe my luck when it flew in close and landed on a fence post, posing beautifully for several minutes #ukbirding

Just as the Pallid Harrier came in close, a ringtail Hen Harrier confused things - those looking for a white rump on a Harrier as their distant ID feature suddenly had to take more care! The fourth pic is of the Hen Harrier, on a remarkable 10 raptor species day for some birders. #ukbirding #birds

Semipalmated Sand (right) stands out structurally, appearing hunch-backed when feeding. Contrast with flat-backed 1st sum Western Sand in Ayrshire from last year. Note neat brown streaking on breast sides of Semi-p & dark crown contrasting with white super to create capped effect 3/3 #ukbirding

There is also a marked difference in overall upperpart colouration, juv Semipalmated Sandpiper (left) being colder-toned grey/brown, lacking Little Stints rufous fringes, bold white mantle stripes and black-centred tertials. 2/3

There should be no room for confusion between Little Stint (left) and Semipalmated Sandpiper (right) for those who learn the respective face patterns. Semi-p shows strong brown loral stripe & ear covert patch, with a bold white super that flares behind the eye. 1/3 #ukbirding

The main problem in my experience James is Little Stint moulting into 1st winter, lacking mantle stripes and appearing colder grey in tone. Separation can become more tricky from October, for sure. Lower scaps/greater coverts then become key features.
