Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 25/09/2026High tide and a stunning sunset over Wales from Severn Beach this evening 0320
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 19/09/2026A few distant crops of today's Leach's Petrel off Severn Beach. Never as close as some of these wave skimmers usually show here. Fingers crossed for the appearance of our first Wilson's Petrel, with one seen less than 25 miles away in Glamorgan this morning. 1411
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 19/09/2026We were all hoping that the Wilson's Petrel seen just down the coast off Glamorgan would do the honourable thing and visit us today. Only the 2nd Leach's Petrel of the year here was some consolation.... 071
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 15/09/2026I have been fortunate to see one Common Nighthawk in England but this eBird report from Tennessee, USA of 500 is truly amazing. Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 15/09/2026The juvenile Little Stint and Spotted Redshank are still on Pilning Wetland at 16.45 in better light. 0242
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 15/09/2026A wander around Pilning Wetland late morning produced my first juvenile Stint of the autumn, the long staying juvenile Spotted Redshank (17th day) & 2 juvenile Little Ringed Plover. I missed the Arctic Tern & Curlew Sandpiper seen earlier there by others. Kingfisher on favourite perch at New Passage 0211
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 10/09/2026Just had the 3rd Osprey of the day go high over Pilning Wetland at 17.00!! 0381
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 10/09/2026Having missed all the Spring sightings of Osprey this year It was great to have the first 2 Osprey day as one flew South along Northwick Warth and past New Passage and a few minutes later one flew in from the West and went East/South East over Pilning Wetland. 1311
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 09/09/2026 A few birds of interest today; Guillemot, Grasshopper Warbler, Garden Warbler, a juvenile Curlew, 5 Sanderling, 21 Knot at Severn Beach plus the juvenile Spotted Redshank for it's 11th day at Pilning Wetland where a Redstart, Stonechats, Whinchat and Yellow Wagtails were also seen. 0231
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 07/09/2026The late afternoon wader roost at Severn Beach still had a good selection with 6 Curlew Sandpipers (including 5 juveniles and a moulting adult) that were well tucked into the rocky roost, a Sanderling, 2 Knot, Turnstones and hundreds of Ringed Plover and Dunlin. 1391
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 30/08/2026At least 2 juvenile Spotted Redshank were seen on Pilning Wetland this afternoon. They both flew off high East after being flushed by a Kestrel. An hour later a lone bird was found on a different pool and was still present at 2.15 pm 0342
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 28/08/2026A morning walk on this morning's high tide at Severn Beach produced a decent wader roost of 500 birds with at least 3 juvenile Curlew Sandpipers, a Sanderling and a few Knot with mainly Ringed Plover and Dunlin. 2421
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 26/08/2026New waders from the North are arriving each day. A brief visit to New Passage late afternoon produced 2 lovely Golden Plover, 3 juvenile Knot and a decent sized flock of Ringed Plover, Dunlin, Turnstones with the usual Curlew, Oystercatcher and Redshank flock. 0281
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 22/08/2026The usual birds were reported today including Black-tailed Godwits, Little Ringed Plovers, Greenshank, Hobby, Redstart, Wheatears, Yellow Wagtails and a moulting Mediterranean Gull etc. Looking good from mid week for more arrivals with South East wind, rising tide heights and something called rain. 4202
Reposted by Paul BowermanAndy Stockhausen @andy-1963.bsky.social · 18/08/2026My luck was in when Severnside's second record of Ortolan Bunting flew up in front of me calling at Severn View Services. Unfortunately, like so many scarcities on the patch, it did not hang around to be admired. So I grabbed a pic of this Wheatear with my phone instead! #ukbirding #avonbirding 1513
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 14/08/2026A slight increase in returning waders today with at least 16 Black-tailed Godwit, 5 Common Sandpiper, 80 Redshank, 200 Ringed Plover, 30+ Dunlin, a few Turnstone plus a splash of colour at New Passage with 5+ Yellow Wagtail, 3+ Wheatear and a showy Kingfisher. 0251
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 12/08/2026With scenes reminiscent of the 2013 Desert Wheatear twitch at Severn Beach a large crowd gathered for the Solar eclipse just as a cloud appeared for the wrong few minutes. 2130
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 11/08/2026A Wood Sandpiper was found on a rapidly shrinking puddle on Pilning Wetland this morning. It was in an area with no general access. Hopefully it will relocate to the much larger first pool that is easily viewed from the sea wall. 1271
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 08/08/2026Some wonderful Kingfisher pictures on the other channel by Mark Smith at Severn Beach today. 180
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 06/08/2026Another interesting morning produced a surprise 1st August record of Black Redstart at New Passage. Also seen there were adult and juvenile Mediterranean Gulls, a Hobby and showy Sand Martins. Common Redstart earlier at Severn Beach. 0311
Reposted by Paul BowermanRosemary Setter @rose-setter.bsky.social · 30/07/2026Looking towards the footpath and The Glen alongside Chestle Pill at New Passage before the sea defences were raised and the glass panels installed. Those were the days @severnsidebirds.bsky.social 291
Reposted by Paul BowermanMatt Hall @matthall95.bsky.social · 29/07/2026Some more footage of the Boney's from before high tide, nicely illustrating the structural differences from the surrounding Black-headed Gulls 0223
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 29/07/2026Goosanders are rare visitors here on the Severnside Patch so it was a surprise to find the first July record, a redhead swimming in Chestle Pill at New Passage and then a few minutes later another 6 flew over heading North East. The Bonaparte's Gull showed very well early morning before high tide. 1221
Reposted by Paul BowermanMatt Hall @matthall95.bsky.social · 29/07/2026After a rather nervy 24 hours, it was a huge relief when @severnsidebirds.bsky.social's Bonaparte's Gull plonked itself in front of us this morning at New Passage. Much anticipated patch first! Also drake Common Scoter, redhead Goosander, Green Sandpiper and 2 Yellow Wag @oscardewhurst.bsky.social 3353

Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 28/07/2026Fortunately the 1st summer Bonaparte's Gull was relocated on the evening high tide at New Passage and appeared to roost with the Black-headed Gull flock so fingers crossed for the morning. A Mediterranean Gull & Sandwich Tern were also seen. Please park sensibly & allow room for the Bin collection. 1202
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 28/07/2026Another great morning. 100's of Black-headed Gulls appearing as the tide dropped. I saw a "smaller" gull fly by away from me with a BHG. It dropped for a few minutes and I fired off some pics. I had my suspicions and others are happy it is a 1st summer Bonaparte's Gull. First for the patch 1614
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 23/07/2026A Little Stint found on Pilning Wetland this morning by a visiting birder was the first one I have seen this year. A few snaps in the the bright glare and heat shimmer. 0241
Reposted by Paul BowermanJamie Dunning @j-dunning.net · 23/07/2026Given puffins fledge at night to avoid predators, and given the extreme tides, we released this one down the channel at high tide in the hope it will be encouraged back towards Lundy. 1213
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 23/07/2026At long last and after several years of bird strikes/kills, the glass panels at New Passage are going to altered. A shame the experts who designed the glass wall didn't sort this at the time it was built. A picture of a dead Sparrowhawk from last year attached. 1183
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 22/07/2026Well I wasn't expecting this on my front lawn/driveway tonight. A juvenile Puffin. Number 171 for my house list. Will be released at Weston super Mare at midnight. 4824
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 18/07/2026I photographed this Curlew at New Passage this afternoon & have since searched on line but gave up as too many projects. Does anyone out there have info that might help? Left Tibia Blue ring, Left Tarsus Orange ring over White ring. Right Tibia Black ring over Yellow ring, Right Tarsus Metal ring. 1174
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 17/07/2026Another day and another good bird on Pilning Wetland. This Wood Sandpiper was a great find by @reuben-veal.bsky.social and was still showing well on the 1st sentry pool late morning. A Whinchat was also an early returning migrant. 0262
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 16/07/2026The 2 adult Curlew Sandpipers are still present on Pilning Wetland this morning with a group of Dunlin. 1381
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 15/07/2026Two adult Curlew Sandpipers were a great and unusual July find by @andy-1963.bsky.social this morning on Pilning Wetland. I managed to take a few very distant record pictures through the heat shimmer, in with a few Dunlin. 0281
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 08/07/2026Highlights from Pilning Wetland today included 2 hawking Mediterranean Gulls, 7+ Little Ringed Plover, a Common Sandpiper, 3 glorious Black-tailed Godwit and best of all the 2 new Lapwing chicks and now 3 new Redshank chicks. With Easterly winds from Friday hopefully some new migrants will appear. 0241
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 03/07/2026A decent selection on the patch today; an adult Mediterranean Gull with 100's of Black-headed Gulls, a Black-tailed Godwit,at least one small Lapwing chick (1st of the year), 3 Swift on Pilning Wetland and the busy parent Kestrels at Severn Beach giving fantastic views. 0101

Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 27/06/2026Second attempt lucky after not seeing this Western Reef Heron in North Wales 2 weeks ago. A lovely experience in South West Wales early this morning. 1381
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 26/06/20264 Little Ringed Plover chicks hatched since yesterday on Pilning Wetland & 3 juveniles from an earlier nest were feeding with parents. Also an influx of returning Black-headed Gulls (120), Curlew (80 at Severn Beach) along with an adult Mediterranean Gull and Black-tailed Godwit at Pilning Wetland. 1221
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 25/06/2026It hit 36° C but felt even hotter in the heat shimmer. It was nice to see at least 27 Shelduck ducklings including a pair of adults with a creche of 19 ducklings of at least 2 different broods (on body size) at Severn Beach. The home grown Redshank chicks at Pilning Wetland are nearly full size. 0241
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 23/06/2026I braved the 32° C this afternoon and had my first visit to the rapidly drying out Pilning Wetland for 4 days. New birds included 3 Green Sandpiper and a Wigeon plus up to 11 Little Ringed Plover and 3 healthy looking Redshank chicks still present. 0152
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 17/06/2026The long overdue M49 Severn Beach junction has hit another hurdle. Seems we will have to put up with HGVs destroying our community for much longer. Perhaps the construction of the Mega sheds should cease until it is resolved. So incompetent, you couldn't make it up 000
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 16/06/2026It was nice to see some of the Patch breeders today. The local Kestrels are finding it easy this year and catch a Short-tailed Vole on every drop, a parent Redshank protested to some passing magpies to warn it's 3 chicks, one of 3 broods of local Shelduck wandered down to River Severn shore. 0171
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 14/06/2026A rare day off the Patch today in pursuit of the Western Reef Heron in North Wales. My 1st opportunity was a day too late with no sign between 8.30 & 17.00. Still plenty of birds in great company, Caernarfon Castle and hills meeting the sea. Thanks to @bri-thompson.bsky.social for the driving. 280
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 12/06/2026A couple of snaps of one of the many Storm Petrels at Severn Beach today and some record shots of the first June record here of Leach's Petrel (measured distance of 600+ metres away using Google maps) 1796

Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 12/06/2026The crazy day continues at Severn Beach at the moment; Leach's Petrel, 4 Storm Petrels, 4 Arctic Skua, 3 Manx Shearwater,Kits, Med Gull. Common Tern so far... 1462
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 12/06/2026An incredible couple of days here at Severn Beach with Pomarine Skua, Arctic Skuas, Kittiwake,Fulmar on yesterday's evening tide and then today @matthall95.bsky.social found our first record of 2 Great Shearwaters that lingered. At least 2 Storm Petrel, Arctic Skua and Med Gull as well this morning. 0444
Paul Bowerman @severnsidebirds.bsky.social · 08/06/2026Despite having seen rarities such as Hooded Merganser, 2 Black-winged Stilts and 2 Temminck's Stints on Pilning Wetland this year, this morning's glimpse of at least 3 Redshank chicks was brilliant. The first successful attempt here. 1542
