Artober 8: If you think the ants are big, wait until you get a glimpse of the creature that eats them in...Oligarchy Of The Aardvarks!
Ink drawing of an ant's head, face on. Above it, it says, "08: Empire Of The Ants".

There's a mildly interesting twist in the final act, but it's not enough to override the high-pitched whistle and/or human-like screaming that announces the ants' presence. Which is, like, most of the movie.

A throwback to '50s creature features, complete with iffy blue-screening of "giant" ants (which are clearly behind glass) and across being gently nuzzled to death by big ant puppets.

Movie 8: Empire Of The Ants (1977). A developer takes potential customers on a tour of her dodgy holiday home development, little realising that the local ants have had a taste of that sweet, sweet nuclear waste.
DVD cover for Empire of the Ants, featuring the principal cast being lightly menaced by giant ants, while a drum of radioactive waste leaks green ooze onto the floor.

Artober 7: Tom the diver was having a nice old time in the dark depths. Sure, the unknowable horrors were everywhere down here, but at least it was quiet.
Pen and ink drawing of a deep-sea JIM suit. Coincidentally just the top half. Beneath it says, "07: DeepStar Six"

The underwater scenes were cute - like something from Red Dwarf or Thunderbirds. Weird seeing Ferris Bueller's mum in a more serious role, though (which I'm now rewatching, naturally).

Movie 7: DeepStar Six (1989). A deep-sea research team hurry to install a nuclear missile platform on the ocean floor, only to accidentally break into a cavern and unleash an ancient aquatic horror. Pretty by-the-book monster movie, but I thought it was fun enough. A bit coy with the gore, perhaps.
DVD of DeepStar Six, rated 15, from Take One. Features the name of the movie across the middle. Above it, there's the bisected body of a diver in a deep-sea JIM suit, blood streaming from it. A toothy monster rises up from the depths beneath it.

Artober 6: The alien had finally had enough, and brought out the equivalent of a spray bottle, used to scold Grapthonian Hypercats when they misbehaved; she quickly found out that humans were made much less solidly.
Ink drawing of the humanoid insectile alien from They Have Returned, firing a weapon that looks a bit like a spray bottle, unleashing a bolt of electricity. Underneath it says: "06: Interceptor Force 2: They Have Returned".

then pulling out giant Science Guns that liquidise it briefly before it gets back up again. Interspersed with CGI that would be embarrassing even in 2002. I know it's a TV movie, but even so. It's no Sharknado, that's for sure.

Apparently the sequel to a Sci-Fi Channel movie I've not seen, it wants to be a mix of Independence Day, The Thing, Predator and GoldenEye, but is unsurprisingly weaker than the sum of its parts.

Movie 6: They Have Returned (Interceptor Force 2) (2002). When a shape-shifting, near-indestructable alien crash lands in Russia and rigs a nuclear plant to blow, an elite squad of American soldiers is sent to defuse the situation.
DVD cover of They Have Returned, rated 15 and "starring Olivier Gruner". Features Gruber's face in have shadow, overlaid by the stars and stripes, while two CGI warplanes fly along at the top of the image. Tagline: "An elite aviation force, a deadly alien enemy...only one winner."

Artober 5: As the car careened over the dam, the rats liked up along the edge and began to sing, high and loud; a lament for their worthy foe, fallen in a battle outside of their ken.

I mostly picked this one out of the stack for today because of this week's Mom Can't Cook: Extra Helpings, with Eerie Indiana: The Other Dimension doing basically the same story much better in 23 minutes and on a way lower budget, so... 🤷🏻‍♂️

This was in my regular VHS rotation when I was a teen, so I remembered it being...better? Basically Stepford Wives for teens, starring people clearly in their mid-20s spouting "hip" lines that no teen has ever said (at least Brick was doing it on purpose). Decent soundtrack, though.

Movie 5: Disturbing Behavior (1998). Steve's family moves to a new town after a tragedy. While he quickly makes new friends in the school outcasts, he's warned away from the creepily well-behaved Blue Ribbons, who they claim are brainwashed. Are they paranoid, or actually correct?
Cover of the DVD of Disturbing Behavior, rated 15. The title runs across the middle of the image. Above it, the main cast of James Marsden, Katie Holmes and Nick Stahl look slightly off camera. Below, Marsden helps a dazed Holmes along a corridor, her arm over his shoulder. A text box says "Including music video Got You Where I Want You by the Flys"

Artober 4: Ellis plucked the letter from the stinking remains of the punch bag, trying to block out the overpowering scent of death from the coyote pelts within.

Beautiful and weird, but it lost me in the final act. Tl;dr - knightly chivalry is stupid - I'm Team Cowardice & Shortcuts. Kick the Green Knight in the conkers and head for the hills, possibly with a cheeky Molotov over the shoulder for luck.
