Convincing. A must-read. However, as someone who worked for a long time trying to convince governments to do things they didn't want to do, I'm not sure humanity's leaders will address the issue before it's too late.

While this research focuses on France, the closure of the local watering holes and the correlating rise in isolation, leading to less critical media consumption and folks finding comfort in far right rhetoric vilifying the other as cause of their abandonment, is something that resonates globally

Judge orders release of five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos and father from ICE detention
Same judge previously ordered pair not removed from US, after preschooler detained with father on 20 January A US judge has ordered the release of a five-year-old boy and his father from a Texas detention center by Tuesday after they were taken into custody by immigration agents in Minneapolis earlier this month. Liam Conejo Ramos, an Ecuadorian boy, was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Minneapolis on 20 January after returning from school with his father. Images of the Minnesota preschooler wearing a bunny hat and a plaid coat went viral online, sparking outrage across the country after claims that the child, who was on the driveway of his home during the arrest, was used as bait to try to arrest his mother inside the house. Neighborism. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
If the Minnesota resistance has an overarching ideology, you could call it “neighborism”—a commitment to protecting the people around you, no matter who they are or where they came from. The contrast with the philosophy guiding the Trump administration couldn’t be more extreme. Vice President Vance has said that “it is totally reasonable and acceptable for American citizens to look at their next-door neighbors and say, ‘I want to live next to people who I have something in common with. I don’t want to live next to four families of strangers.’” Minnesotans are insisting that their neighbors are their neighbors whether they were born in Minneapolis or Mogadishu. That is, arguably, a deeply Christian philosophy, one apparently loathed by some of the most powerful Christians in America.

Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. On this day last year, I wrote this for Human Rights Watch. Seems even more relevant today. www.hrw.org/the-day-in-h...
Last week, at the US presidential inauguration, Elon Musk gave a Nazi-style salute. Twice. Neo-Nazi groups and other white supremacists in the US and elsewhere celebrated it as a clear sign of support for white
supremacist ideology. Particularly in the context of his repeated public backing of far-right parties, it's hard to see the gesture as anything else.
Afterwards, Musk - the richest man in the world and now head of the new US Department of Government Efficiency, established by Trump, himself known for pushing white supremacist ideology
- tried to say that what everyone saw wasn't what everyone saw.
A quote from George Orwell's 1984
seems appropriate here:
"The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command."

Please. This is absurd. Europe can certainly deter Russia and defend itself if its focused and determined. Perpetuating a sense of European helplessness may help Rutte bureaucratically but its 1. wrong 2. prevents action. 3. willfully blind: the US ain't coming to defend Europe.

On the weakness of state terror: once ppl internalize the regime's lawless brutality, that they are no safer in their homes than in the streets (& vice versa), and that their unwavering defiance is what confounds & disempowers the regime, they also realize they have nothing to lose but their fear.
