Clouded Yellow from earlier today in Thetford Forest. It's the first time I have seen a Clouded Yellow on the same day as a Brambling!

A train journey from Cambridge to Brighton this morning, followed by a walk up Whitehawk Hill. At the top, I was treated to some courtship from a pair of Long-tailed Blues on the Everlasting Pea. Several other LTBs were seen. @bcsussex.bsky.social

Dear councils, 97% of UK meadows are gone. So if you have wildflowers like ox-eye daisies on roadverges and in public spaces, don't spray them with weedkiller or over-mow them. Let's give pollinating insects like bees and butterflies a chance 🐝

I think this is a Clouded Yellow f. helice but a really pale one (rather than something rarer). It's being backlit and hopefully it shows the lack of black on the upper wing. I initially thought it was Green-veined White when seen in flight. Babraham, Cambs, today. @bc-cambs-essex.bsky.social

A lovely Goat Moth caterpillar crossing the road at Upware, Cambs, this morning. Luckily the road is closed so it made it across safely.

Helice form of Clouded Yellow (one of two) from East Tilbury, Essex, yesterday. I managed a few views of the Queen of Spain Fritillaries but they only responded to the sunshine and kept out of the wind. @bc-cambs-essex.bsky.social

Do you think recent rain will help if Horseshoe Vetch recover enough for egg laying?

Butterflies were in short supply at Devil's Dyke (Newmarket end) today but I did manage to pick out a few each of Adonis Blue, Common Blue and Brown Argus. I never know if this section is Suffolk or Cambs, so I'll tag both. @bc-cambs-essex.bsky.social @bc-suffolk.bsky.social

And possibly more abundant this time of the year. I assume birds reduce the number of eggs as autumn and winter progress.

White-letter Hairstreak eggs on Elm @magogdown.bsky.social today. I normally spend hours looking for these in winter but just had a quick look today and found these two within a minute. Hopefully plenty more laid. @bc-cambs-essex.bsky.social

Very lucky to have a Song Thrush nest in the garden. The nest is in the middle of a Hawthorn and Bramble tangle. The garden seems to be providing enough food; there are plenty of snails and caterpillars. However, flying ants are on the menu this afternoon. Sawston, Cambs.
