A Small Copper laying in our garden this morning... @norfolkbutterflies.bsky.social

A Small Copper is a small, feisty butterfly, and this female was laying in the garden today. The Small Copper (Lycaena phlaeas) has upperside forewings that are a bright orange with a dark outside edge border and with eight or nine black spots. The hindwings are dark with an orange border. The males of this species are highly territorial and will defend vigorously their patch against rival males or any passing insect and even respond to the shadow of a bird passing overhead.

Talking butterflies/moths is always enjoyable. Last weekend we attended 2 events the Finnbars Force Charity Day & Edingthorpe Church Harvest Day. We loved hearing the passion people have for nature. We shared our overnight catches of moths, which at Finnbar event included a Clifden Nonpareil.

Why are we featuring a picture of a banded demoiselle? This image won the NWT Photographic Competition (mobile phone section) was taken by one of our transect walkers Clifford Wicker. His image along with many others including butterflies will be on display at the Cley Visitor Centre all this month.

Ringstead Downs judging by social media posts seems to have been a butterfly hotspot this year. It was fairly quiet yesterday but I did manage to see both Small Copper & Small Heath. A Clouded Yellow seen by other walkers eluded me. #savebutterflies

Reports received of Swallowtail caterpillars feeding on Fennel. These are likely to be the Continental Swallowtail (gorganus), not the British one (britannicus) which is found only in the Norfolk Broads. We would be interested to hear of any sightings of the Continental form.#savebutterflies
