Many (most) organizations have overly aggressive goals which are a direct result of wishful thinking masquerading as strategy. Missing goals really grinds people down overtime and actually undermines progress. How to be a voice for "realism" without being painted as "negative" feels important.

Quarto 1.10 shipped Friday. The highlights page lists one feature. The changelog lists 74. Mostly preview friction: stale pages, _brand.yml ignored until restart, format: changes needing two renders. If you work in Positron, that's your whole day. A boring release. Best kind.

Code has gotten cheap, and that changes what's worth building. An underappreciated use of LLMs isn't the shipped app — it's the throwaway tool made mid-task, like a carpenter's jig: built to make one cut exact, not to be kept. Cheap code makes a whole new class of project worth making.

Free text has infinite ways to be wrong. A grammar or function call doesn't. That's why tool calling and SQL generation (see shiny querychat) get more from LLMs. Constrain the model to a structured response and trade an open, hallucination-prone vocabulary for a closed, testable one.

Engineering used to be the expensive part of building products. It isn't anymore — though cheaper building won't make a spray of projects land. The bottleneck is the story: internal and to users, in their language, so the need is obvious. Always hard; now an order of magnitude more important.

The image shows a section of documentation for the Iconify Quarto Extension version 3.0.0. The documentation includes a code block with YAML configuration settings for the extension, specifying the title, subtitle, format, and iconify settings such as set, size, and flip. Below the code block, there is a table with two columns: "Shortcode" and "Icon." The table lists four shortcodes for different emojis and their corresponding icons. The shortcodes are '{{< iconify exploding-head >}}', '{{< iconify anguished-face >}}', '{{< iconify astonished-face >}}', and '{{< iconify face-with-spiral-eyes >}}'. The icons are an exploding head emoji, an anguished face emoji, an astonished face emoji, and a face with spiral eyes emoji, respectively. All icons are upside down.
