This has sent me round the twist, my employer in my payslip asking me to donate my wages to… my employer so they can… treat me better? Wild. Just another NHS moment.

Trying to keep an open mind about this, can someone explain to me why the GMC insists on investigating and prosecuting via the MPTS criminal allegations that the police investigate and take no further action with? Why is this a role they've given themselves? www.mpts-uk.org/-/media/mpts...

Recently returned from Japan. Key take home message is that it’s very pleasant to live in a society where people trust and respect each other, knowing that there comes a great deal of shame from breaking the rules. Everything’s clean and kempt, everyone is polite and considerate. Loved it.

Hospital canteen: it’s £2 cheaper if you get that with peas, then it’s the meal deal. Me: I don’t need the peas, can we pretend I have the peas so I’m not just wasting the food Canteen: no. You need the peas or I’ll charge you more.

Just saw Retrograde in the west end which was EXCELLENT and absolutely worth 90 minutes of your time. Don’t read the synopsis, just accept your fate and get a ticket. (Other things that are EXCELLENT still playing are Giant, Kyoto, Titanique, Benjamin Button)

I continuously make references to something being “based on the novel Push by Sapphire” which wasn’t funny a decade ago when people might have got that reference but still I must continue to keep the fire alive

Not to sound like an old man but why is the front page for UK users of BBC News prominently featuring a story about Saturday Night Live, a show that literally cannot be watched in this country? You can't stream it, it's not on TV. Who cares that it's had an anniversary show?
BBC News homepage showing the story in question highlighted in a prominent position.

I feel like the number of people that tell me they had an issue after a previous anaesthetic of taking “too long to wake up” outweighs the number of times I’ve seen this problem 1000 to 1, who is telling everyone this??

My traitors prediction, ignoring the Seer because it’s too much of a wildcard to build in (and arguably isn’t necessary as a mechanic at this late and exciting stage): - Leanne will call out Freddie and Alexander as traitors in the morning - Freddie will be banished, but will have started throwing

Just fielded an urgent call at work - my mum switched bluetooth off on her iMac, and all the mice and keyboards in the house are bluetooth. It's actually a bit of an oversight, every Mac peripheral is bluetooth now, why does it not warn you before rendering you unable to control the computer?

My theatre wrapped for 2024. 44 shows seen, some at the fringe, overall 15 things outside of London. My strategy this year is to see fewer things but try and make every one of them a winner. The median ticket price this year was £35, it's still not as expensive as it seems to see good theatre.
Long list of theatre productions seen.

Just finished a rewatch of all of Breaking Bad, it completely holds up and justifies its place as one of the greatest TV dramas of all time. This time round Walter is much more clearly the bad guy from even just a few episodes in, and Jesse came across as a much more tragic figure. A great show.

I'm one of those people whose 'Wrapped' doesn't really work, hundreds of hours of study music, musical theatre albums with multiple artists credited on each song, and I think I must have left the 1975 playing on a loop somewhere for a day or two because they're in there and I barely know them.

I love the idea of POC imaging but these replies to a Bluesky post showing some lung ultrasound findings show how variable the training/abilities of POCUSers can be; two doctors saw precisely the same images and came to completely different conclusions. #critcare #Medsky
One reply on Bluesky saying "Barcode sign in M-mode, indicating a pneumothorax", and another reply saying "lung sliding and sea shore sign... Rule out pneumothorax"

I did the European Trauma Course last week, and it’s true what they say, it’s a resus course which isn’t a bit rubbish. Would be fun to have a course like that but for medicine, an ALS aiming beyond F1 level stuff, with difficult team dynamics, clinical conundrums, prioritisation challenges etc.

Sentimental Moment or Why Did the Baguette Cross the Road?

Don't fill up on bread
I say absent-mindedly
The servings here are huge

My son, whose hair may be
receding a bit, says
Did you really just
say that to me?

What he doesn't know
is that when we're walking
together, when we get
to the curb
I sometimes start to reach
for his hand

I'm really pleased that med students are doing the home STD testing kits, let's all be super positive about sexual health, but honestly did not expect to see someone in their student scrubs doing that fingertip blood lance thing in the education centre bathroom sink... there are better places surely

I’ve now deleted my tweets and am retiring from twitter after living across both worlds a bit for a few months. I’ve been on that platform since 2008, I was in secondary school at the time, I grew up there. It’s maddening how the best social media network could just throw it all away.

Interestingly my other half is making almost double what I can make for extra shifts (doing a Saturday morning outpatient clinic vs ICU night shift), I think because it’s money coming from waiting list reduction budgets. Same grade, very different pay. Interesting to see where trusts priorities lie.

I've just had a read of the Assisted Dying Bill (linked). It's a good bill. I think we need to listen to all the people with terminal illnesses within the last few months of their life who are telling us they wish to be allowed to die. What do you guys think? bills.parliament.uk/bills/3774/p...

Whatever happens on assisted dying, but our attitude towards end of life needs a shift. Can’t go into details - it isn’t just my story to tell - but my father’s last days were needlessly horrific as doctors pursued a clearly futile treatment. The day he died was only the fourth worst day of my life

This is really something. One of the best marriages of actor and role I’ve ever seen, John Lithgow was incredible. Not a flawless play but some real moments of magic.

Hi friends, since this place is having a shakeup, an intro. I'm Andrew, I'm a doctor, currently an ICU and anaesthetic registrar working in the West Midlands. I like talking about work stuff but I also am a big fan of theme parks, theatre, politics, being gay, railways, history and my cat (Pimlico).

Instead of confusing literally everyone forever why don't we just abandon the term "spinal shock"? It has no real value as a concept and just invites confusion with neurogenic shock.

The issue with 'A Very Royal Scandal' is that it's nowhere near as interesting as the actual real life TV interview it's trying to create a drama around. It also doesn't really get any deeper into the horror of Epstein or what the prince might have known than, once again, the real interview did.

There’s an interesting shift in attitude I’ve noticed amongst newer doctors, I think fuelled by all the the reasonable animosity and disputes they’ve come up during, that they owe so little to the system they’ve lost the basic professional attitudes of having a job. This is an example of that.
Can an FY1 be moved to another department for staffing?
Foundation
F1 on a well staffed cardio ward. Middle of the WRI was called by rota admin and asked to do a 'favour' and cover renal for the day because they're short staffed. I was a bit confused by the way they asked for a 'favour' as I assumed I could be moved around during contracted hrs if staffing needs arose. So l said of course and went.
Then I found out from my F1 colleague my cons was unhappy that l'd been moved from the ward and that I should've refused, and asked for the admins number which I gave.
Then another colleague said to me that I should've asked for a locum rate to cover the ward if I was being moved because they'd have had to put one out if I didn't go there. They also said that as an F1 my license only allows me to work in my contracted areas because of the 'supervision' and that if they wouldn't let me locum in the department then I shouldn't be asked to move there.

For high stakes exams, I don’t mind that there’s a viva, it probably gives more leeway than other exam forms. But I reckon if you gave people 10 minutes of prep time for each subject just to gather thoughts you’d get a much higher standard of answer and a more fair test.
