Since the price of diesel in the US is in the news, it may be of interest that at this point, a lot of transport contracts are such that every 5 cent increase in diesel adds 1c *per mile* to every railcar and semi trailer, charged to the customer. If diesel jumps $1, add another 20 cents per mile.

A lovely, if cool, day at Caulfield for the first day of Monash Open Day. Stop by today (Caulfield) or tomorrow (Clayton) to hear a bit more about the BA and your options to learn ancient history, archaeology, and more at Monash!
A view of the Monash Caulfield campus during the calm before everyone arrives. The scene shows a lawn with seating, trees, and some academic buildings.

Happy 250th to the United States, in whose name some have done extraordinary, brilliant, and noble things, and some have done far worse. We can, I hope, remember, learn from, and improve on the latter, without diminishing the former, but any honest history of America must include them both. 🇺🇸

Two lessons I learned when I was a bridgemaster (on a railroad swing bridge, coincidentally): 1) they are not exactly subtle constructions, especially when they start moving, but 2) boaters sometimes had very unrealistic expectations for what the bridge can or can't do. #2 trumped 1 here it seems.

Thanks a question on the Liverpool list, I looked up Seneca's bit about death by lightning versus diarrhea, and can now report that the word Seneca uses for diarrhea is the extremely vivid "deiectio," or "downthrow" (as Corcoran's note). The grandeur of ancient literature!

One reason why I think respectability is stupid is because it's often used as a mask. Such judgements are rarely about the clothes themselves, but more often about the bodies beneath them. To wit, no one raised an issue when Elon wore a graphic t-shirt and ball cap to meet the Trump cabinet.
Two photos: One shows Zelenskyy in a black quarter zip at the White House meeting, the other shows Elon Musk in a black graphic t-shirt, black topcoat, and black ball cap, also meeting with the Trump cabinet.

So aside from the obvious questions (can a lion even blow a horn? How is it holding up the horn with just its lips?), Clive Palmer's new bunch really, really need to work on their Latin.
An image of the seal of the "Trumpet of Patriots" party, with part of the head of Clive Palmer to the right. The seal depicts a lion improbably holding up a horn with only its apparently colossal lip strength, as well as a Latin motto "Honor omnia" which they want to mean "Honour above all." But they really should have spoken to someone about that.

I'm working on assessment design at the moment, so I decided to try Copilot in a use that some of my students have said they use it: finding a line (that says what they want a line to say). So far, it has made up lines it attributes to Faulkner, Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, and Cormac McCarthy.
